Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

I'm aware there's a way to manually fix this because the game keeps trying to connect to a server that no longer exists nonstop throughout the game, but it's a hassle that I just don't care enough to bother with anymore. F*** Ubisoft.
I'm a fan of the series and I DO recommend this game, despite its shortcomings.
I reviewed this game in some detail in my YouTube channel. It's in Spanish, but it has English subtitles. You can check it out here:

This game could have been so much more than it is. It has great visuals, animation, atmosphere, interesting story, etc. But the thing that bugs me most about it is that despite the huge open cities, your tasks are extremely linear. Go here, listen to some guys, rough this guy up for info, track this other guy, race some dude, help your friends for a favor, and so on. The assassinations themselves are no different. You are not given options on how you might tackle the task. It usually boils down to bum rush them and stab them in broad daylight. I guess I was expecting some Hitman style planning and execution, but it's just not there. I feel like if they had taken a few nods from Hitman such as the planning, memorizing guard patterns, disguises, and multiple options of how to kill your target this game would have been epic. I felt more like a psychotic madman who just enjoyed stabbing people in public rather than an assassin. "Stealth" is just about non existent in this game. It's fun enough to play through once but I'll never bother with it again.
I got this game first on PS3 right when it came out. Due to technical problems (the game hanged up often) I soon returned it to the store and got the 360 version. It's a fun game with good story and nice climate. Sure it's repetitive, the submissions are basically the same, however I somehow didn't mind it too much and enjoyed climbing every tower to uncover the map.
