Description
Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.

While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
  • Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
  • Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
  • Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

Great game aside from the investigations

The game is fun and the story is intriguing, but it's definitely one of those games where you're just playing it because you want to do the entire series. It's fun but the gameplay is very, very basic. For the most part it boils down to climbing a tower to see part of the map, do an investigation, and then do the assassination. Once you do enough assassinations then you complete a memory sequence, which then continues part of the modern story, and then you continue. I honestly did not enjoy the investigations that much. Your options were basically "follow a guy into an alley and punch him a few times", "kill a few guards on the roof", "make it to this area of the map within a certain amount of time", and "follow a guy until he's close to other people and pickpocket him". Now what I did enjoy a lot about this game was the stealth. There weren't too many actual mechanics, but it was designed in way where you really had to mentally plan ahead on how you were going to get in, take out your target, and get out as quickly as possible. And then if you failed and got caught you'd have the entire city on you. The combat was fairly simple, but the sheer amount of guards you'd have to face made it so that you wouldn't want to get caught because running around the city would eventually overwhelm you. And then once that happens, really the only way to hide is to get on the roof. Unlike Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood (and probably the rest of the games), you can't just kill your target and then quickly make your way to another section of the city and be completely fine. If you happen to fall off a building into the city then you'd immediately have guards running at you no matter what part of the city you were in. The way it was executed just made it really tense if you got caught and relieving once you managed to hide.

Nothing Beats the Original

This, right here, is Assassin's Creed at its purest. Far too many people tend to overlook the first one because it's just so different from subsequent entries. Sure, it's repetitive as all hell sometimes, and its age shows in that regard, but I still consider it to be my absolute favorite in the series. As for this port, it comes from that age where PC ports were an afterthought handled by the B team, but I think it's pretty alright, all things considered. This is the only game where I'd recommend turning V-sync on, because the physics are tied to the framerate, and for some reason, switching on V-sync fixes a lot of annoying issues in that regard. As for the controls, it plays surprisingly well on mouse and keyboard to the point where I actually kind of prefer it over a controller, provided you rebind your keys to your liking. I'd also recommend turning off your HUD and using headphones. Final verdict: You should absolutely give it a shot, but get it on sale.

I love it despite it's problems.

Yes, the missions leading up to an assassination are repeated time and time again. Yes, the guards mark you for death as if you had a neon sign attached to your back saying "I'm an assassin, Shhh". Yes the flag collecting and minor-templar killing are entirely pointless. Yes the plot goes a little wonky towards the end. Yes the last half hour has a ton of unavoidable swordfights. Yes the final boss is a pain in the ass. But the atmosphere is perfect, the free running and jumping is incredible fun, the sword fighting is perfect (A minority opinion I know, but I took fencing, trust me on this). Most of the plot is gripping even if it does get a bit weird. But most important of all are the assassination missions themselves. They can be a little too scripted, especially if you get noticed, but there is nothing quite like killing a man on high alert on a ship in the middle of a harbor with close to 100 guards without him seeing you before it's too late. And on almost every mission, if you plan and time things right, you can pull off a perfect kill. But if you don't plan quite enough, if you fail to take out one of the archers guarding him, if he sees you before you get quite close enough; You know it was your fault. Now you half to chase him down, or take on him and his guards in a straight up fight. This can be thrilling too, but the knowledge that you could have done better is what makes this game unique. This is what it's sequels failed at. The simple idea that now you have to do things the hard way and it's your own damn fault. And that is why I love this game, despite it's faults, even more than it's (also excellent) sequels.

Excellence

I am astounded by this title. I've read most of the other reviews here, and I just want to add two cents, or so. In some ways, the gameplay is a bit repetitive in that there are limited kinds of tasks to accomplish, but the difficulty continues to ramp up as you move through the story, so though you might be trying to accomplish the same task again, it becomes more difficult, usually because there are more guards that have learned to fight better. This game is my introduction to the series, so when I see someone rating it lower because it doesn't compare to what came after, I'm pleased. If these people are correct, this series will continue to get better. So buy this, and enjoy it knowing that you're in for more assassination goodness later on down the line.

Alternate history

My first review in GOG, and one that isn't about any old game. Ok, Assassin's Creed: if you don't know it, this is a game that takes ideas from the Prince of Persia modern games, ideas from the Splinter Cell games... ok, ideas from Ubi Soft games in general and put them in a game with an intriguing story and mechanics that, yes, become repetitive. I liked the story a lot, and I enjoyed this game playing it with small doses, like 2-3 hours from then to then, but its flaws are blatant - they would be dramatically fixed in the next game. It's not very difficult, it features great enviroments that makes you believe you are there, and after all, it's a game that lets itself play confortably. I enjoyed it A LOT - indeed, it is one of my most favourite games of the last decade, jumping over roofs, riding horses, silently killing, freeing innocents - and think that its strong features surpass its weak ones, but be aware that there is a lot of repetition here... and a very frustrating cliffhanger at the end.
