Assassin’s Creed® is a game that redefined the action-adventure genre. With photo-realistic graphics, an advanced physics model, and a nearly fanatical attention to detail, this title was able to begin a new chapter in gaming history. However, the excellent technical aspects are only half of the reason why it became so popular; the other half is the story.
While you technically play the game as Desmond Miles, the main focus of the game takes place elsewhere. The year is 1191: Jerusalem, the middle of the Third Crusade. You are a member of a mysterious order of assassins where you have trained your whole life to do one thing and one thing only – to kill. The recently growing influence of the Order of the Knights Templar disturbs the delicate balance of power in the region and therefore directly threatens The Brotherhood. The clash of the two most powerful organizations in Jerusalem at the time has the most unexpected consequences and triggers devastating events that threaten the world itself, and you – Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad – are in the middle of all this.
Well-constructed story that will pleasantly surprise you many times along the way.
Impressive level of interaction with the environment – crowds react to what you do and act accordingly.
Open world gameplay lets you to decide how and when to achieve objectives, where to go, and gives you nearly complete freedom to get there.

People here often forget to mention that this game is first in franchise, that AC2 is another step in franchise, and that doesn't mean that this game is bad. If you look this game from perspective of 2018 or 2012-yeah-but you must think about this game from angle of player from 2008...
This will defintaly go down as a good old game. Some glitches and jank, 2 crashes but nothing to bad. The game is fun and doesn't have alot of fluf the later assassin's creed games add. Get the game on sale and have a good time!
This is my second experience with the non-rpg entries in the AC franchise, I played AC2 before this and played some of the newer entries. I enjoyed the story thoroughly, it was smart, interesting and had a very unique style, unfortunately it does not stand the test of time when it comes to it's design decisions, there have been numerous times when I was infuriated with the useless npc's that are just designed to block your path, the controls that even on controller often didn't respond correctly to inputs, which is a shame as the combat and animations during it are extremely well done for a game made by Ubisoft.
As someone who has played this title off an on for years, I do recommend the game despite some objective flaws such as the repitition and flawed combat.
What makes this game so underrated is how you slowly gather information for your targets which is what helps make the assassinations so memorable to me that no other game in the Assassin's Creed series has ever been able to surpass.
The game also has a nice big beautiful open world to explore which even to this day are still a joy to explore.
So overall despite some objective flaws that do hurt the game, I recommend it especially because I would like to see Ubisoft bring more of their newer titles to GOG
May be quite repetitive (albeit a little less so than the console versions due to the PC version mixing up some of the missions), and, if coming from later games in the series, can feel a bit bare, but as a foundation for the series, and in its own right, Assassin's Creed is still a solid game that's worth at least one playthrough.
Does have a couple technical issues though, both of which can be worked around.
Issue 1: The game physics break at high framerates. (for example, the Leap of Faith will result in you dieing) Capping the framerate to 60 FPS will fix that.
Issue 2: The game may freeze for a few moments every now and again. This one has a few workarounds, but the best and most reliable one involves a bit of hex editing. (tutorial explaining how to do so can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LfrG7Fhmto)
