The best Army Men game.

One of the main reasons I signed up with GOG was to purchase the old Army Men games. They were a staple of my childhood PC gaming experience and I was very pleasantly surprised to find them all these years later for dirt cheap and able to run on a modern rig. At the time I purchased Army Men I, II, and Toys In Space, GOG did not have World War, which was very disappointing as World War was/is my favorite Army Men title. I am elated that GOG has finally added World War to their store. In my opinion, World War is the best Army Men game thematically and mechanically, and it carries forward the improved squad system developed from previous Army Men titles. It also has those humorous and sometimes dark and gritty cut scenes that us Army Men fans love. If you've never played an Army Men title before, this is the one you should start with. You should really buy all of them though, they're all worthy of your collection. Now GOG just needs to add Army Men: Air Tactics to the store and the Army Men RTS Collection will be complete!

One of the best in the series

I've always loved the Army Men series, despite it's flaws. As games, they are usually objectively bad, but with a cool concept that is brimming with potential even today. Since I only played the console games as a kid, this is my first playthrough of the PC version of Army Men: World War. I found the game to be surprisingly good! You command a squad of soldiers though campaign missions fighting with dangerous tan troops. The level layouts and objectives change often enough to keep things interesting. The entire game takes place on the "Western" front so the maps don't have any extreme changes aside from a few cities you assault. You can control just about every green soldier you come across in the game, so unlike other titles a main character's death doens't end the mission. Soldiers that survive the current mission stay with you for the next level along with the weapons they are carrying. The bigger your group the more risks you can afford to take and the more special weapons you can haul with you. You can separate them into squads too and change their rules of engagement. The UI is a bit clunky, but taking the time to learn how to run a few things with the keyboard makes things like switching weapons a lot more fluid and fun. Aside from the campaign there are also Battles. Players face off against 1-3 AI armies of different colors. There are plenty of maps and options and game modes to choose from and it's a lot of fun to play! Like many games in the series this one has it's share of flaws too. Friendly soldiers can get caught in the crossfire of other friendly units and get killed needlessly and soldiers can get stuck when in big groups or navigating longer distances. Over all this game is enjoyable even without nostalgia to prop it up, and it's worth the low pricepoint.

Army Men at its finest.

I have played all the ArmyMen games many times during the golden age of pc gamming. I would have to consider ArmyMen WorldWar the best. They are all great games but this one really stuck with me. Great levels, good ai, and the cutscenes are always a real laugh. I have really enjoyed seeing these games added to GOGs ever expanding library of classics.

one of the last good ones in the series

Army Men is of my favorite PC games growing-up, along with "Army Men II" and "Toys in Space" but i had no idea (at the time) that the PC version of "Army Men: World War" is so different from the common PS1 console version, which itslef is very poorly made game. this along side "Army Men: Air Tactics" are the last good games in the series, then they shift from PC to consoles and the games got worse and worse to the point of shovelware. the PC version of this game is the only good game in the "Army Men: World War" sub-series. in this game you don't play main protaginist Sarget Hawk, instead play a regular squad commander and you lead you're sqaud in the frontlines to stop the global threat of the Tan Army. the game tone is alot darker and grittier then the other games, and also kinda returning to it's roots of the original game, being more grounded and realistic. the graphics, mechanics and gameplay are almost the same, but now it's opional to switch into diffrent solider and take command from him, even if the main squad commander dies. all the familiar things from previous titles are back. the game can be difficult but with practice it's very fun game. it might not be as great as Army Men II (in my opinion), but its still a good game. thank you GOG for bringing this title a second chance to modern PC's.
