A complete disappointment.
This game was originally called Arcania: Gothic 4, and it has since been changed to only be called Arcania. It's a monumental let down even when compared to Gothic 3 and the voice acting is so horribly bad that it in itself warrants an uninstall. The story puts you in the shoes of a dull sheepfarmer going to get revenge for the death of his girlfriend. Your relationship with the woman is not built up in any way, leaving you completely uninvested with no stakes in following story. Any worthwhile dialogue your character may have is completely obliterated by the voice "acting" and the dialogue in general ranges from "phoned in" to "infuriating" (the witch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzJYz7Pj--I ). Throughout the game you will meet familiar NPCs that completely fail to live up to their given names, the game desperately trying to pass as a story set in the Gothic universe. If anything this game irreparably damages the Gothic IP as a whole and I assume this is why they later pulled the Gothic 4 subtitle, if the Gothic universe is to be of any future use. I have the physical collector's edition of this from when it was Gothic 4, and the one redeeming feature would be the story booklet and the artbook that came with it, which were surprisingly not at all an indication of the pain I was in for. It seems they are not included on GoG. Gothic stuff aside: The gameplay itself is grindy and you will mostly fight similar not very challenging copypaste enemies throughout the whole game, with a bit of challenge finally added when you face off against orcs. The maps themselves are gated areas of about medium size, with clear linear questing, not at all the open world of the predecessors, so that tag should honestly be dropped from the store page. In closing, I'd say it's not worth any price even at a sale. Only get this game if you are being paid to play it.
