Welcome to Anachronox, an abandoned alien artificial planet at the centre of the universe, now home to lowlifes, thieves, and scoundrels. Here we join Sylvester "Sly Boots" Bucelli--a down on his luck PI--and a cast of 6 other unlikely heroes on their quest to discover who or what is trying to destroy the universe. They are the only ones that believe it is happening, and the only ones that can do something about it.
This title is a very unique game in many ways. The combination of jRPG style turn-based combat, extraordinary characters with their own personalities, an epic and brilliantly told story, colorful graphics, and absolutely hilarious humor is something very rare. You will travel through galaxies, explore bizarre planets, and journey through space and time. There are no easy choices in this game, no obvious, predictable events, no black and white characters. This complexity made the game well reviewed--it has showed up on PC Gamer's Top 100 PC Games list three times!--and will keep you fascinated and amazed for many hours.
Great mix of Japanese and Western style RPG elements with great humor, a gripping story, and a very unique cast of characters.
Excellent storytelling via professional-quality cutscenes and dialogue will accompany you through the entire 50+ hour long adventure.
Huge world to explore with many secrets to discover and mysteries to solve. One playthrough is, by far, not enough to see it all.
I loved that game. It seemed to me so complex and cool. It differed drasticly from the pc-rpg i've expirienced. Anachronox blowed me away with setting and unusual cinematicness. It also was goddamn funny with some crazy shi- going on. It reminds me a lil' of 2 first «Hitchhicker's guide to the galaxy» books.
It's humorous, and has some interesting mechanics. The end boss is especially satisfying as it melds elements from different segments of the gameplay in a way which you feel clever for discovering. You'll probably need to consult a walkthrough at some points if only because being an older game it doesn't hold your hand on where you should be going all the time. I actually haven't played this game in many years, I hope I'm being accurate here but the love I feel for this game is still strong.
I loved this game. Still love this game. Excellent (for its time) 3D visuals, engaging characters and storyline, some laugh out loud moments! (oh god the sock!) and pretty good, if easy, core gameplay)
Until you get to the end. On a scale of 1 to 10, the game's difficulty in the first 99.9% is maybe a 0.5. Suddenly at the end, that ramps up to 11. I was utterly unable to defeat the final boss even knowing what to do and studying Youtube and Gamefaqs. It was impossible with my setup. Im not the only one that's found the final boss terribad. So if you don't mind a MASSIVE sudden spike in difficulty RIGHT at the end, feel free to enjoy. It's great up until then.
Games have moved on quite a bit since this released and it does now feel rather clunky. BUT, once you get used to it you will find a magnificent little game with memorable characters, brilliant writing and imaginative locales to visit (and recruit - no spoilers here).
A 94% game on release as it really was a benchmark for the genre on PC. These days, the graphics, which, like Deus Ex, were not great on release are really showing their age and movement and level design are somewhat lacking. Still a must play for any RPG fan and a must for JRPG fans.
84/100
This is a game that sits in your library for longer than you're willing to admit, always looking at you with that sad puppy face that's only asking for love. One day you put on your serious gamer cap and start playing this glorious piece of software (only thing is you don't know that yet). And when you finish it you can't stop blaming yourself for not having done that earlier (I still do!).
The game itself is an ode to the RPG genre. From the unique characters to the enthralling story, it's a point blank shot to your gamer's heart. It gets to you, moves you and even makes you laugh with some clever humour.
The only downside is the weird gameplay you must get used to, but once you get over it, it steamrolls over your prejudices like a barn sized snowball.
I can't do less than urge you to play the game, you won't regret it. I must admit the game seemed a bit harsh at first, but once you overcome the downsides (and the graphics) it's a marvelous experience.
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:
If you're like me, one of those who go to the cinema without having watched even the so called "teaser trailer" you may want to skip this. Otherwise, keep on reading, specially if you've finished the game.
I loved the Mass Effect series, but upon playing Anachronox I can't all but blame Bioware for ripping off the plot of this masterpiece to use it on the ME series. Don't get me wrong, I love both games but I think Anachronox should get far more credit and love than it did.
