Just So Scary!!!

This game was recommended to me by a good friend around the same time I had just discovered Outlast. I was raving on to him about just how scary I found it and how long it was taking me to pluck up the courage to proceed LOL!! He said that's nothing, have you played Amnesia? I said I hadn't heard of it, why? He laughed casually back at me and stated that if I wanted to know fear, if I wan't to be properly scared, then this was the game to try and man, was he right!! I am not going to laud over you all with own specific reasons and give long winded examples of why this is so scary because I have NO doubt, everybody else will have already reafirmed that anyway. Let's just say, it's less than a week until All Hallows Eve and given everything that is happening in the world right now, there won't be too many things going bump in the night, this year!! If you are after some genuinely creepy gameplay and you are in the mood to be scared, then look no further as you won't be disappointed!! Amnesia, The Dark Descent is not to be trifled with, but play it in the dark with headphones for the full pant wetting experience!!! Highly recommended, 5 Stars!!!!

MUST play for fans of the Horror genre

For a game from 2010 it still holds up extremely well with its creepy sound design, anxiety inducing atmosphere / ambience, intense and also sometimes relaxing music :) 18th century haunted castle location along with some creepy ass monster designs. Amnesia also has a really interesting story that unfolds throughout the game with exploration / puzzle solving and some fantastic voice over work from the proatagonist in the diary entrys, really helped with the atmosphere and setting. Speaking of puzzles this has some of the most enjoyable in a horror game ive experienced in a while, having to interact with the environement or throughuly search / read to solve said puzzle made them the all more satisfying to complete, nice change of pace from modern horror games making puzzles so easy they're a pushover and forgettable. Overall a must play for horror enthusiasts you owe it to yourself to check out Amnesia its a horror classic for a reason and I can see why this game had the impact that it did, playing it over 10 years later it still holds up incredibly well and still be intense to playthrough.

A horrific journey

One of the best Lovecraft inspired game. The pure terror while exploring Brannenburg castle is unmatched. The music and sound design helps with the tone and setting, unraveling a memorable experience. This is a must for Lovecraft fans.

Lovecraftian horror game done right

This game is just perfect. From the beginning to the very end of the game, the horror is present and you feel horrified. It truly reminds me of the stories written by the one of the best horror writers, H.P. Lovecraft. There is horrors that drive you insane. There is horrors that cannot be seen. Sounds and graphics works well together, telling the story and showing the horror of a protagonist. And as we all know, horrors lurk in darkness though too much light might reveal you to the monsters. There is no jump scares, all the horror is done with sounds etc. The developer truly knows how to build tension. Although I was scared all the time, I was sad it ended because I just fell in love with everything in this game. Luckily, there is more in the Amnesia-series, and Penumbra.

The final form of Penumbra

Amnesia - The Dark Descent is what horror should be. You play as Daniel, a man that wakes up in a strange castle without memories, and only a misterious note from himself telling him to press on. Easier said than done. Daniel is being hunted. His hunter's nature is never made quite clear, but the danger is. On your journey downward you are completely helpless against the horrors that hunt you, darkness being your only ally. Or is it? A prolongued stay in it will drain your Sanity, and bad things happen when your Sanity is low. You have a lamp and tinderboxes to light the numerous light sources through the castle, but you are more easily spotted in the light... It's up to you to decide if it's a good idea to be surrounded by light or not. Gameplay wise, the game consists of going through various hubs, solving puzzles and trying to survive the enemies you encounter. Along the way you'll encounter various notes shedding some (never complete) light on the mysterious castle, including pages from Daniel's journal that will also reveal his past and how he came to be in the castle. The atmosphere is amazing, and you are always on edge, wondering if you are gonna be caught this time. This is the strong point of the game: you survive, never fight. You are unable. Seldom has a game made me tense througout its duration (not even Penumbra, Frictional's previous claim to fame), but Amnesia is masterfully crafted during its whole duration, with only a couple of slight dips. The game also includes Justine, its expansion (worth playing through a couple of times to understand everything) and a level editor, where you can also play custom campaigns, so the potential duration is high. There is also a Hard mode, but I recommend going for it only after playing through once, as it's more of a "challenge yourself" experience that detracts from the survival horror aspect. In conclusion, if you are a fan of horror, you can't go wrong here.
