This game is not horror in the same vein as Dead Space and Resident Evil where you can defend yourself with a gun or at least a knife . Rather you are defenseless and the only advice is to run away into the dark from the monsters than try to fight.
However the darkness is a double edged sword, it hides you from the monsters but at the same time it makes you more insane.
This is a game that is best played with the lights off and headphones on. The atmosphere is incredible, as is the music which adds to an already fearful adventure.
I had heard so much about this game that I wasn't sure what to expect by the time I played it. I don't normally enjoy games from the survival horror genre but this game did not disappoint. Rather than "jump scare" horror, the game slowly builds tension and dread over time, peaking during a few points of sheer panic. The controls are a little unwieldy, which only serves to heighten the sense of horror when you're fumbling with a door or valve as you run away in terror.
The visuals and sounds from the game are fantastic, and really add to the immersion. It's simply a beautiful game and definitely a classic in my library.
This game is worth it for the DLC Justine alone!
A short game that condenses all of the Amnesia experience in one level (about half an hour if you don't die - theres no saving or respawning) and an amazing amount of depth can be had from reading/listening to the material left lying around.
