The Bad overpowers the fine things

I just can't get into liking this, first they start it off with a two hour segment of walking simulator that gets you in to a state of drugged tunnel-vision. Then you get to the parts that remind you of amnesia, physical puzzles, scary corridors... but with a very real and scary new threat of having your controls taken away to pat and speak to your belly, random visions of people that mean nothing to the player, main character that has to talk over everything, loading screens that should be cut off for ruining the mood. Immersion and "being there" goes down the drain when the "story" want's a piece of the action. I think i would have liked this game if they heavily cut content that doesn't need to be there. Now it being there lessens the experience to a level where i don't want to play.

Frictionals weakest game

(This review is based on PS4 version.) This is not a scary game, the atmosphere is more moody than frightening. The monster encounters are very easy and without tension, There are some interesting concepts but the game fails at making an enjoyable story out of them. I didn't care about any of the characters or what happens to them. The main character keeps blathering nonstop breaking immersion. Previous Frictional games had me hooked throughout their events, this one just feels too long. (The game suffers from obvious and clumsy padding: bridges breaking, character falling through ground and elevator not working etc). I'd rather have a shorter and more impactful experience than something that feels dragged out. Environments are bit dull, but i did enjoy exploring some of the locations and otherworld has interesting lore. I did enjoy playing it but when compared to rest of Frictional games catalogue, this one is a disappointment. If i could give this game 2,5 stars, i would.

Not worthy of the title

This game would've been decent had it been a random indie horror game. However being a successor to The Dark Descent it had big expectations to fill and unfortunately it falls short big time. The game is incredibly linear, a lot of the story/exposition is forced on you in a way that makes the gameplay stop all the time. And if you're not interested in a random character's family and their offspring, it doesn't give you anything to relate to. Shame on me for looking at the reviews and expecting this to be a good game, it wasn't.

Just OK

The gameplay is constantly being interrupted by story segments or dialogue. At times, it felt more like I was playing a walking simulator. As for the story, it was broken up so much that it made the plot harder to follow and I think that ultimately hurt the experience the most. The environment can be creepy in places but the monsters are really just annoying. You don't spend a whole lot of the game hiding from the creatures, except during a short segment at the very end. Most of the time you're forced to run from them, flying through room after room and feeling like you're missing the opportunity to pick up needed supplies (matches and lantern oil). The puzzles range from obvious but tedious, to extremely vague and also tedious. Some are so cryptic that I was forced to look up the answer. Eventually I got to the point where all I wanted to do was move forward with the game so when I'd get to the next puzzle I'd just google the solution right away. Overall, I think the game was worth playing if you can get it on sale, but it is definitely nowhere near as good as the original Amnesia, Penumbra or Soma.

Not great

The reviews are here for a reason, people. Aggrevating. I don't really care for the story, I think it's boring. And, it's intrusive. It keeps interrupting the gameplay. Every time you have to pick up matches or oil or anything, really - BOOM! - cutscene. Want to light a candle? BOOM! Cutscene. A hanging lantern? BOOM! Cutscene. Turn a corner? BOOM! Cutscene. Since light sources are what keep your sanity, of course, this game with its lame storyline has to do something to stop you from doing that effectively. As I said, BOOM! - Cutscene. I don't think I even want to go back to this game after already making halway through. I thought the cutscenes would slowdown as the game went on. Nope. If anything, they grow more constant. Definitely not like it's predecessor, this game has me in tears, but, it has nothing to do with the storyline, as the devs intended; I'm in tears because it's aggrevating as all hell trying to get through two minutes of gameplay without the lame story stopping me from accomplishing that.
