Description
The Swine are Rising!
In 2010 Frictional Games terrified the world with the cult horror Amnesia: A Dark Descent. Now they bring you a new nightmare. Created in collaboration with The Chinese Room, the studio behind Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is an intense and terrifying journey into the heart of darkness that lurks within us all.

The year is 1899
Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus awakes in his bed, wracked with fever and haunted by dreams of a dark and hellish engine. Tortured by visions of a disastrous expedition to Mexico, broken on the failing dreams of an industrial utopia, wracked with guilt and tropical disease, he wakes into a nightmare. The house is silent, the ground beneath him shaking at the will of some infernal machine: all he knows is that his children are in grave peril, and it is up to him to save them.

Step back into the horror
Like The Dark Descent, this is a game driven by its story, exploration of the world and the constant fear of the unknown. You can expect classic Amnesia gameplay, physics interaction and the signature blend of high-end gaming with low system requirements.

Think you understand fear? Think again.
A Machine for Pigs takes both the world of Amnesia and the technology of The Dark Descent to new heights of horror. Built using an updated version of HPL2 engine, the game features stunning visual and environment design, incredible music and audio effects and adapted artificial intelligence. These are all driven by a gut-wrenching, blood-curdling new story, set sixty years after the events of the original game.
  • Unique game created in collaboration between two independent game companies famous for exploring the outer reaches of what games can be. Fresh and new approach to the Amnesia world while staying true to its origins.
  • Unique physics interaction that has been developed and improved since 2005.
  • Exceptional artwork and environments that run on low system specifications.
  • The darkest, most horrific tale ever told in a videogame. Stunning soundtrack by award-winning composer Jessica Curry.

Not bad but not really good either

I know that this one was developed by the chinese room and fictional games, so if i find this diferent than the other fictional games, that is some explanation to that. The gameplay is the usual of fictional games but the interaction is less than usual in this kind of games, you can only interact with the puzzle parts and with drawers to search for documents and the audiologs i understand that this matter could infuriate someone. The plot is fine, that is probably the thing i liked the most of this game albeit you are forced to act in only one way without much to say in the inteaction with the story. The athmosphere is also fine but the interaction with enemies is minimal and only by the end of the stoy you do something with the antagonists. I thing the main problem is that is feels mediocre in comparation with the other ones, feels overall less than before, but it isn't a bad game. It happens that shares name with better ones.

It's a Spooky Walking Simulator

You walk around, listen to a monologue, and look at spooky scenery and sometimes run from monsters that aren't really that much of a threat. It's less like Amnesia: the Dark Descent, which played like a real game, and more like Dear Esther but with even more ennui and misanthropy. I think how you feel about the game depends on how you feel about that description. I don't mind evocative walking simulators, so I enjoyed it alright. But if you don't, I wouldn't recommend it.

Better than what people might say.

I'm someone who unironically loves walking simulator type games and well, if anything, A Machine for Pigs had me on edge and it had me feeling anxious. And that's how you know it was doing its job as a horror game. The atmosphere generally was very good, the soundtrack was pretty fitting and the story was SUPER dark. (Heck, the ending even made me a little emotional) Yeah, the gameplay might not be as involved as it was in The Dark Descent, but I'd rather a game tell a good story than force annoying gimmicky gameplay on players. Before playing A Machine for Pigs, I played SOMA and that game proved this same thing. People tend to agree that playing that game is a much better experience on the "Safe" difficulty.

Flawed as a game; worth the playthrough

Do not expect it to be a good sequel to "Amnesia: The Dark Descent", because it is not a good Amnesia game. Expect it to be a walking-simulator instead, expect, also, the following weakpoints: Uninspired level design, unfun and unchallenging puzzles, unremarkable enemy encounters, glorified hallway of a map... That being said, to me, the positives outshine the negatives: Delightfully creepy (even moving) story, gorgeous original music composed by Jessica Curry, outstanding perfomance from the voice actors (Toby Longworth, Mark Roper and Zak Craig), excellent writing, superb ambience and great concept art. Really powerful delivery from Mark Roper and Jessica Curry in the ending, I get goosebumps everytime. I think it is, at least, enjoyable at its worst and sublime at its best. If you know what to expect of it, that is.

Thank you for OpenSourcing the game

What can I say. It's definitely not the same as with 1st game. This one takes dark turn and dabbles more into gore section rather than mysterious and melancholic horror. It may be something that might really scare someone who isn't expecting it but i guess that is what this game was trying to achieve. Performance is really good on Linux same as with the 1st game and despite unexpected difference it's still worth of giving score 10/10.
