Discover the legacy and embark on the journey to Amerzone. Buy now!

You are a journalist summoned by an aged explorer who has been "branded" with questionable credibility for over 50 years. The old explorer's tale tells of traveling to the mysterious Central American country, called Amerzone. His story claims that the large egg that he brought back was associated with native Indian tribal beliefs and rituals involving the proliferation of great white birds that fly continuously from the time that they are born and never land seems incredible. But curiosity and the opportunity for a good story will probably get the best of you...
  • An immersive cinematic adventure with an unforgettable storyline
  • Beautiful scenery and visuals designed by Belgian comic artist Benoît Sokal
  • Many memorable characters and interesting puzzles

Sokal's first is not the worst?

Sokal's first game is, by all means an "early work". Though the hazy, milky, vaguely greyish-tinged environments and datedness of the graphics do detract a little, the design the 2d art and the obvious fantastic imagination that went into the design of the creatures that inhabit it, along with the oh so Sokalish steampunk machinery that would flourish in the Syberia games are exactly as expected and what makes this game something worth playing through. It's a laid-back game of exploration more than a puzzler, more meant to make you absorb and enjoy your surroundings than to use your wits. Linear in its fullest, but finely story-driven, the progress actually does resemble the train/train station progress of Syberia in more way than once - and, like there, you're following in somebody else's (steampunk-laden) footsteps with a fantastic creature as your motive, goal and destination. That said, this is a standard first person adventure game of the time engine/gameplay-wise. The puzzles are sparse and generally quite easy, the only frustration coming from pixel hunting on a few occasions. Don't be afraid to make good use of the journal you get - you are supposed to! Just don't OVERuse it like I did ("hint": you have to find the "coordinates" on Shipwreck Island, the picture showing the 5° change in direction is not a hint (though it logically should've been, but still)). Plenty of empty (gameplay-wise) screens are a bit empty, but, perhaps intentionally (and more realistically). The lag while moving makes that a tad annoying (as much as leafing through the journal...). And, despite that, the game is very, VERY short too (I'd be more than slightly annoyed if I paid full retail price for the box way back when, like this, not as much). It's a 3.5 for me, and I'm hesitant to give it a 4. so a (sad) 3 it is. Pros: 2d graphic design, details, the story and the atmosphere. Cons: Character design, low difficulty (apart from pixel hunting), shortness. Essential for Sokal fans.

Not much of anything

Amerzone is a beautiful game, with lovely environments and sound effects that sound as though they were actually recorded in a rainforest. However, the game is extremely short and the puzzles can be frustratingly obscure in their solutions. Be warned also of a potential game breaking bug at the end of chapter 7. No big deal, just make double-sure to save at the end of chapter 6.

My goodness what potential

Sokal creates an outstanding atmosphere and story in this little adventure puzzler, but the dev team clearly lacked anyone with any skill in puzzle building. What makes games like Myst so wonderful is that you get to explore distant worlds, finding stange objects and try to figure out what makes them tick and what their purpose is. Amerzone has the first part down, but completely lacks any serious puzzles. You find some wonderful area, excited to explore it, then realize there is absolutely nothing there except for some random item you pick up, plunk it on the only other thing in the area that can be interacted with and tadaaa, next chapter. There are entire rooms and areas that have literally no purpose and nothing to interact with. The fact that these rooms and areas are so beautiful and strange makes it more frustrating that they are empty. With a good puzzle developer this game could have been a 20 hour masterpiece, instead of a 6 or 7 hour jaunt through the park. If you love the genre, dive right in and enjoy a weekend playthrough. If you are curious about the genre this could be a good jump off point as it is so easy and short. Regardless, prepare yourself for some unrealized potential.

A true nostalgia title

When this game came out, I remember being blown away by the story and setting. It still remains one of my favorite games in existence because of those. New players will probably not find much fun here, but people who’ve played it before will get to re experience the magic of the game.

Kate Walker would approve

This one’s an interesting dive into the origins of Benoît Sokal’s storytelling, especially for fans of the ‘Syberia’ series, like myself. As one of his earliest works, the game introduces many of the themes that would later define ‘Syberia’: a melancholic journey, exotic yet decaying environments, and a deep sense of mystery tied to forgotten civilizations. However, while the worldbuilding is compelling, the gameplay might not appeal to those who prefer third-person adventures. I had a hard time with it, as well, as it follows a classic first-person, point ‘n’ click format, which can feel a bit clunky compared to the smoother third-person exploration of the ‘Syberia’ series. That said, the puzzles are engaging, although sometimes quite challenging, and the story, centered around a journalist uncovering the secrets of a mysterious bird species, has that same wistful, dreamlike quality that made Sokal’s later works so beloved. It’s a pity the mute protagonist is a complete blank slate, and that we hardly meet any other characters during our short journey. And I also would have loved subtitles… With a full remake set to release in April (honestly, reading about the remake is how I learned about the original one), this is a great time to revisit or discover Amerzone. Hopefully, the new version will refine the experience while preserving the unique atmosphere that made the original stand out.
