Sequel, perfected

The prequel, Alwa's Awakening, was already a good retro puzzle platformer. But Alwa's Legacy takes everything up a notch, improving on all the downsides of the original. It still lacks the depth of the likes of Hollow Knight, but it is nevertheless an enjoyable experience. Like the original, Legacy also works perfectly on Linux (Garuda). The controls are tight, and now movement is a little faster, which makes the game even more enjoyable. The skill tree is quite minimalistic, but gives a sense of advancement. There are also new abilities, which expand the character development further. The warp and tear system is likewise a welcome addition. Difficulty could have been a little harder, though. Whole-heartedly recommended.

Good game, good sequel

==Linux compatibilty (for me)== Flawless, had zero issues Alwa's Legacy is a continuation of Alwa's Awakening, although there are some references to the events of the previous game, you can play it independently. You're back at the land of Alwa, now in 16-bit graphics, to stop the bad guys once again. The music remains great, the graphics, and especialy the backgrounds, are gorgeous, the people of Alwa are as charming as ever, and just like its predecessor, the main focus is exploration in Metroidvania style. There are more itens than before, allowing for greater movement and different ways of exploring the land of Alwa, as well as plenty of new and familiar areas to venture in once again, or for the first time. If you enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of the map, this game is for you. It will give you plenty of hours if you want to explore everything, and some relaxing fun if you don't care about being a completionist, all while having a respectable difficulty. Also, there is a pig, and you can pet him. 10/10 would pet again.

Good retro style platformer / RPG

I bought this game on sale because I was looking for an old-school platformer to spend a few hours on, and found myself completely hooked on the game wanting to discover all the secrets. A good game like in the old days when you'd let out a few swear words because of the frustrating bits. However, this game is very well done and the frustrating bits can be retried quickly after dying. The RPG aspect is fairly minimal, and it's more of a platformer, but the overall atmosphere is very much that of an RPG. The graphics and music are great, and the controls are just perfect. Too bad that the game's story and the world's lore aren't fleshed out; it would have made you appreciate the beauty of the scenery even more. I've seen several people complain that the game isn't difficult enough. For me, the difficulty was just perfect, but it's true that some bosses were relatively easy. Generally speaking, I'm not too much a fan of indie games, but this is one I'd recommend.

Nice platformer with some logic element.

This game is mediocre but I spent some time playing this title, and I can say that was nice, graphic and music are fine, story is a bit mediocre. But what was frustrating me the most time was map and quest logs - one big chaos and I spent most time searching another quest goal (searching for artifact or boss or person that can fix house ...).

A worthy sequel to the original

Alwa's Awakening was an "8-bit style" game (eventually an actual 8-bit game with the NES port). So it's appropriate enough that it would get a "16-bit style" sequel. And for better or worse, it really does feel like a SNES game. I do think it does a good job expanding on the game mechanics of the original. The 3 spells are now upgradable, and she collects new powers like an air dash and "slow down time" power. A lot of the returning enemies have new abilities as well. It does a good job keeping the flavor of the original without feeling too much like a mere rehash. The game is a good length. It's not too short but it does not overstay its welcome either. It might have taken longer if I'd tried to go for 100% collectables, which would have required a lot more backtracking, but it's not necessary to do that (AFAICT there's only one ending). I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it's actually so authentic that it retains a lot of the design flaws of actual 90's games. If you don't have a tolerance for that then you probably won't like this either. But if you do enjoy playing actual SNES or Genesis games then this could stand among the better ones. One last note: This is not Hollow Knight, so don't come in expecting it to have deep lore. It initially seems like it might actually have a much deeper plot than its predecessor, but then it mostly fails to deliver on that. So don't come in with high expectations story-wise.
