Considering the time this came it was clearly trying to catch up to Resident Evil after RE stole the thunder of the original trilogy.
It takes lots of cues from RE and adds an interesting lighting system, it still looks nice having real time light effects on the static backgrounds with the flashlight which also doubles as aid to find items and other interactive items such as the notes and diaries.
Both characters present different challenges, puzzles, paths and interactions, despite using most of the same areas in Shadow Island the differences are substantial enough to give motivation to try both characters.
Although there are many rough spots, possibly some holdover design elements of the classic trilogy, keys aren't clearly labeled nor do their names change after you examine them, the game won't automatically use the keys if you got them, so if you want to avoid running back and forth trying all the locked doors, the game will make you look at the map, think of the description of the keys and make you think about where the keys go, when you think you got the right door you still have to go into the inventory and use the key from there.
Combat is a bit rough, there are plenty of weapons, but a lot of annoyances come with figuring out which are most effective weapon for each enemy and the right moment that will trigger an enemy's pain state so you can attack efficiently, but if you explore the game does reward you with plenty of ammo, medkits and additional weapons and you can dodge a lot of the enemies without too much difficulty which helps against respawning enemies, you can pick your fights, some enemies will be kept in check if you find and turn on the light switch of that particular room, by the time I was done with Carnby's story I still had about 100 shotgun shells to spare. The game doesn't try to hint you of the most effective ways to deal with enemies, it trusts you to try and figure it out for yourself.
The notebook option is also a nice touch to get your character's perspective of the events they experienced and also to help keep track of things if you get lost.
The story starts strong enough, a good suspense with both characters having different motivations for going to Shadow Island and building trust through adversity and the shared goal of wanting to escape the place alive. Some of the dialogue is strange, but it's also telling of the time it came out. The ending, although the area is lengthy enough with action and puzzles the story felt rushed towards the end, the final boss barely felt like a proper fight, it took some experimentation but it wasn't hard to figure out how to win the fight, took a couple of attempts.
Getting it to run can be tricky, do check the forums and google if you're running on Windows 11, I had plenty of issues running it mainly from cutscenes in wrong aspect and colours.
All in all, it's clear they wanted to catch up to Resident Evil which already had 3 mainline games at that time, it succeeds in some aspects and makes a push forward with the lighting system, but combat and movement is often more rough than RE which will take some adjustments, but not a bad game for survival horror fans. Worth it on a sale.
Maybe because I played it a long time ago, I overlooked what others might find a little clunky? But wow, AiTD plays like classic Resident Evil in a lot of ways, and it's reasonably modern if the old classic Alone in the Darks are a bit too throwback for you.
The two characters have not only different storylines, but different gameplay styles.
Edward Carnby is your shooty boi. A majority of his playthrough involves guns with an extra barrel (starts with a double-barrel revolver, gets a triple-barrel shotgun later!). He gets some puzzles and a few boss fights too though!
Aline Cedrac is a scholar, not an action hero. She starts with just a flashlight, and her gameplay is a lot more enemy-avoidance and clever puzzle solving. Later on she gets some pretty cool experimental weapons though.
Sure, you get some zombies, but the unique point of this AiTD is that the monsters are "shadow creatures." Some behave just like any other game baddies who need extra lead in their diet, and others are banished or at least spooked by light.
Speaking of light, for a game of its age, light vs darkness is themed rather heavily, and the flashlight dynamics are really impressive. (Fortunately, unlike Alan Wake, you're not reloading that light every 30 seconds, if I remember correctly...)
Aline's playthrough especially, gives you that feeling when you wake up at 2AM to pee after watching scary movies all night, and you feel yourself running for the light switch because something could be right behind you!
I remember some lengthy journal entries, and unfortunately a few befuddling book-somewhere-provides-the-secret-code puzzles, ack...but no slider puzzles I don't think!
If you're a Resident Evil fan you'll feel right at home. You even get your cardiograph health indicator and special talisman charm thingies that let you save your game, fortunately without having to find a typewriter first!
Wears a bit thin by the end, but definitely worth playing for unique ideas.
Controller support is present, but the game will not recognize d-pad or triggers. Little graphics option are present and the dafult brightness of the game is far too high, this is supposed to be a horror game.
I would address that with Reshade, but it has a well known issue working, supposedly if you do not use Galaxy it works, but without Galaxy it has an error that keeps it from launching at all that is far more trouble than such a mediocre and unremarkable game and series is worth to fix.
In short, it's crap. Do not buy this.
