This game is bad. Looks cool, and has atmosphere, but otherwise the controls are bad, the leveldesign is bad, lacks tutorial phase, there's no minimap, gives misleading clues, the save-system is trash, and I can't play it with light in my face.
Oh,and the game can't suffer Alt + Tab, so you are definitely alone. And I lack the patience to make handwritten notes.
The atmosphere is very cool, graphics are dated, but as someone that has played the previous 3 games I got not much to complain on this front, the story looks interesting and the music sets the mood, unfortunately that doesn't save it from being infuriating, Tank controls were always bad, but I cpuld live with them, what I can't tolerate is that enemies seem to materialize in front of you, really, those dogs pop up right in the middle of the screen, inches away from me, leaving me miliseconds to aim and shoot, it's like if the game forgot to spawn the enemies up until the last second, it is obvious the devs wanted to go more action oriented with this title, but it appears that they also want you to take it slowly like in the previous games
After I got too frustrated with Edward's campaign I decided to try Aline's and is much much worse, in the second room you are shown that the beasts can be disintegrated by light, but in the next room the game goes "just kidding, now you can only scare them a little", but them the lightbeam from the flashlight does not always "hit" at what you're aiming at, leaving you open for a free hit, you can try to run, but running endlessly is not the best way to set up a game where you need to explore small rooms infested with enemies
I know I am biased because just a couple of weeks ago I finished Alan Wake so I probably was expecting too much from a game this old, but at the end of the day I only got one question "am I having fun?" if the answer is negative is time to stop, and this not happened to me while playing alone in the dark 1 and 2, 3 tho... is a story for another day
Its a good suvival horror classic, tank controls, punchy weapons, good sound and interesting puzzles, yet, when running in modern systems the cutscenes wont play properly, just a black screen with audio and it seems to be a known issue for quite some time, controller support is... mid, as only some buttons work properly but thats to be expected from such an old game, besides that, tis quite an enjoyable experience.
I've wanted to play this game for as long as i can remember but all I ever found on Steam and Playstation was the PS1 version. This is the version of the game i've been wanting to play, but nothing I do makes this game run. Every cutscene causes the game to crash. The fixes either don't work or it doesn't make sense how to do it as I am not an IT expert. Really wanted to try this but i guess my only option is finding an overpriced ps2 copy somewhere. What a disappointment.
