Very Aesthetically Pleasing Retro Game
Really cool retro graphics, great soundtrack, awesome game play. I would recommend it.

Classic turn-based strategy
Satisfying magic spells and good town and diplomacy mechanics. The only downside is the slow pace of the combat, which is best to automatically resolve.

HoMM + Civ mechanics
Feels like youre learning to play same game again. But after many hours of 4X strategies i got bored in a hour. Still great title for GOG collection.

This is the best out of the series IMO.
I played AoW2 and Shadow whatever, but this one is still my favorite. AOW2 got too micro-management happy with the cities and the interface isn't as nice. This one has basic simple city management and that is all you need, the rest you can concentrate on the more fun battlefield stuff. Graphically it still looks decent enough, you can change the resolution to just about anything you want too. Music is great. Battles are perfect tactical type battles. If you don't like micro-management hell and like concentrating on battles then get this version of AoW and not AoW2 or Shadow.

Classic
Played this years ago, and loved it then. AoW has aged quite well and still remains a classic! Classic music, gameplay, art, and sounds (AoW sound effects have even been used in recent movie trailers. O_O) Playing this now on my netbook and it's a blast! It's great to take a break from the FPS world with this.
