It's a single chapter story with bits of exploration and side quests sprinkled across the island. It was a wonderful experience, if not for the occasional disappointing dialogue. Still an easy 5/5.
Also, while this game has in-game acheivements, they don't exist on GOG. :(
I started this game after completing both Hollow Knight and Dead Cells and I was longing for something relaxing and easy. I picked up A Short Hike, rushed through the game in less than half an hour, and I immediately regretted it. This is a game better enjoyed at a slower pace.
There is a lot to take in, the world is nicely drawn, with naive but lovely characters each of which has their own little story to share. The mechanics are fluent and fun, it's so nice to just glide over the island and take in the views to a beautiful soundtrack. The graphics menu lets you choose between chunky pixel graphics or a more hand-drawn style.
But best of all, this game lets you play at your own pace and it doesn't force any moral of the story upon you. I'll be back to play this game in a less rushed manner and I can wholly recommend this game to anyone willing to take a break and relax on a hike as short as you'd like it to be.
I have had this game for a while now, and I find myself returning to it again and again. It's short, so I usually get through it in one sitting (maybe two, if I really feel like exploring on a specific weekend), but no matter how much content I have already seen, I still do it all over again every other month. It is nice to have your personal little island park to go to whenever you wish to get away for a while, and I am very thankful that I have one in my life.
Perfect game to relax. You get a little island to explore. The hike is short, as the game title says, but there's still a lot to see and many different NPCs with their own personalities and problems, makes the world feel alive.
