lovely game with fun dialouge trhoughout.
don't rush getting to the top. the side quests are fun and helps the world building.
controls are reallly solid.
would reccomend this highly.
gave me 2,5hours of great fun and i feel like there is still much more to explore
This is a truly beautiful game. It is extremely calming without being boring. The setting seems small at first but there's something to find in every corner and you get the feeling the island is endless. It's very nice that the characters have their own personality and the quests are fun to complete. Once you get enough to be able to roam freely you get a beautiful feeling of freedom. It really does feel like you are flying! It is a truly beautiful game. I would really love to see a sequel or an expanded version. Really looking forward to the next work by the creators.
A Short Hike was about exactly what I imagined: a short and very pleasant trip to the top of a mountain. The pixelated graphics are great (but there is an option to reduce this effect partially or completely), there are some folks to talk to, some side quests to do and some items to collect. Also the controls are done perfectly well, so it's a joy to run and climb and fly around on the little island(s).
It's just that it was so much fun that I was a bit disappointed when it was over so quickly and even with all the backtracking and running around to be sure that I found all golden and silver feathers and did everything there was to do, it took me only about 3.5h to get there. Just reaching the peak would have been easily possible in half that time. And well, while there is some dialog when you reached your goal, there is no real ending, so it feels a bit unfinished.
I would really like to see a full fledged game with at least 8h (better 20h) while upholding the same friendly and relaxing mood and game mechanisms. I'll be happy to rate this with 5 stars then, but even though I really liked it, I feel that only four stars are justified for the named reasons.
I bought this game to play with my son who is 5.
There is some reading required, but this title is possibly the best introduction to gaming for a small child.
Graphically, it is appealing. The pixel texture is used to great effect, the character design is consistent and cute without being "cutsie". The learning curve is gentle and well thought out.
It's a game without violence and has a fantastic soundtrack that could double a studio Ghibli score.
We completed the core game fairly quickly, but continue to go back and wander around and explore, plus there have been several free content add-ons since I purchased it and they are good too and only add to the playability and longevity.
I bought it for my son, but I play it and my wife (who is not remotely a gamer) does too.
I have literally nothing bad to say about this game.
I want a sequel.
This was an absolutely perfect experience.
Perfect pixel art. Great writing for characters. Just the right amount of exploration to where it doesn't feel overwhelming. I actually feel like i can 100% this game. It only took a little over an hour to get to the top, and then it feels like the game opened wide to let me go even further around the island. So rewarding.
Lots of stuff to collect, lots of treasure maps and riddles to solve. A handful of tasks to try to complete to earn gear that helps improve your ability to explore.
It's like a super mini version of an open world exploration RPG... Minus the leveling up and stuff. Add great relaxing music, great sound effects, and lovable characters and you have a home-run of a game.
Also... You should try using the pick axe when playing Beachstickball... That's all I'll say about that. Let's just say it's fun. The Dev's thought of everything here.
