Description
A Legionary's Life lets you play as a Roman soldier during the years of the Second Punic War and beyond. Rise up through the ranks and win prestigious awards or just focus on making it home in one piece; it's up to you.

This is a unique single-player game with RPG elements, extensive usage of attribute and skill checks, a turn-based combat system involving many variables and a touch of roguelike features.

In this game you will not be the hero who wins battles alone; you will be more like a gear in a much larger machine.

Features:

  • Live through (or die in) carefully reconstructed battles of the The Hannibalic War and the ensuing Second Macedonian War from the point of view of a pre-Marian Roman legionary.
  • Start as a poorly skilled conscript soldier in the middle of the Second Punic War. See how long you can remain alive and eventually become a respected veteran.
  • Permadeath: when your legionary dies, it's game over. However, the points earned by your most successful characters can be spent to enhance your future ones.
  • Dozens of random events affecting your life as a legionary.
  • Replay value. You will only see a fraction of the game in each run.
  • Turn-based combat system involving fatigue, morale, reach, confined space, high ground and more. Always keep your Stance high or you'll become a lot less effective and open to attacks. Adjust your Attitude to increase your odds of survival.
  • Frequent skill/attribute checks based on your values and the difficulty of the task at hand. For example, a good relevant attribute might give you a high chance to succeed at a specific task. If the chance is, say, 80%, it means you can still fail sometimes. Exceptionally high stats may even guarantee success, but they are difficult to attain.
  • Win rewards based on the real decorations used in the Roman army at the time, including Civic Crowns, Mural Crowns and Armillae.
  • Rise through the ranks in your maniple and become a Centurion. Or don't, and just try to survive until the end of the war.
  • Equip yourself with swords, helmets and armors from the mid-Republic era.

Fairly accurate Legionary simulator

My first character survived many battles. A veteran of the war against Cartage in Hispania and North Africa, made it all the way to Optio and died in his third campaign in Macedonia, by taking a risk while trying to save a comrade during a scouting mission gone awry. My second character who was very charismatic but not so fit, died in his second battle and never made it back to Rome. My third character, was very promising, raising his fighting and physical skills very quickly, racking up kills and making Tesserarius after just the third or fourth battle. Unfortunately he died fast and unexpectedly after receiving several critical wounds in quick succession against a few Cartaginian defenders. I would say the game is a fairly accurate Legionary simulator and nice history lesson. As in real combat, alot depends on your abilities and choices, but a stroke (or several) of bad luck can kill you at short notice.

Impressive and good game!

I got this game on Steam the moment I noticed it, spent a way too much time on it and its awesome! RNG isnt that bad once you realise how the fighting system - especially fatigue and stance works together. Once you get a feeling for it you will do better and better - even with your shitty starting characters. Following the life of an ordinary legionaire, you will have a rough time with your first starting character a it will have bad starting attributes and miserly fail. But dying is fun! The more as the score you achieve in each run is averaged by the game and results in more and more bonus points you can spend on your character creation screen. That way you will get better and better dudes and you will survive longer and longer and be able to finish those daring feats you can accomplish. Because the difference between starting with an average 45 points per attribute or a healthy 60+ is... quite a lot of dying. Overall, it is a great little game and quite addictive for 7€.

Excellent game!

Do not believe reviews complying about bad RNG. Fight system is based on random rolls, like most of the RPGs, but it is well balanced. The game may be hard, and one have to learn the game to be good at it, but once there it is clear, that skill and tactic has far larger impact then RNG. The game is exceptional in it's genre. I highly recommend it. If you ever wanted to become a Roman legionary this is the best you can get.

Simple and entertaining text RPG

You start as a random dude with lots of attributes to check and some standard gear. Initially and between campaigns You can train, buy stuff or improve Your standing with troops or command. The campaigns themselves are nice descriptions of roman warfare, with a few decisions to take and skill checks to pass. Ultimately You'll end up in combat, which isn't half bad a way to implement roman tactics into a game: You fight the guy You face for a while, then You rotate back to the rear regardless of how You did. Here, too there's decisions to take: Try and seek glory in aggressive combat or do Your best to stay safe for the time being? Your health only regenerates between campaigns, so You best plan ahead. The training gives room for lots of improvements, but generally the mechanics remain simple. You've got a Javelin and a short sword, helm and armor - no magic rings here, upgrading is limited. For me the simplicity of the game is an outstanding quality: It allows meaningful decisions as well as tactics, but I don't need months to learn the game nor do I need to brood over level ups. Since it is turn based I can play at my own speed and take as many breaks as I like... Although it is the kind of game that has me wanting few breaks... A nice little gem and definitely worth recommending! As far as the RNG is concerned: It's a normal RNG and it's involved in everything. I believe it essential in telling this game's story: A legionary has a risky life and things can go south quickly. You've got some information what You are getting Yourself into, but there's always uncertainty. That's what it is supposed to tell us as I understand it. It's neither fair nor broken, it's not "skill" in itself nor does it lead to mindless gameplay. Just Your standard RNG. Some people will always hate it and swear that it is biased against them and so forth, I trust You'll know what to make of such "impressions": Love it or hate it - it works as intended as far as I can tell.

Tough Roman Simulation

Wonderful historical RPG for the $ If you are a roman niche player you will likely enjoy this game. Aside from the interesting plots and ability to up the risk taking over subsequent replays, my favorite aspect is the portability of the game. It takes very little CPU for running in the background, and since it is turn based RPG, it can wait while I do other things and is easy to return to, tab-alt back and forth . Very relaxing, consistently humorous, and bestows an appreciation of ancient soldiering. Perfect for relaxed laptop gaming and filling small bits of downtime. Good Luck!
