Tales of the Abyss is one of the most celebrated entries in Bandai Namco’s long-running Tales series. Originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 2005 (and later on Nintendo 3DS), it captured fans with its memorable cast, emotional storytelling, and the signature “Linear Motion Battle System” that brought fast-paced action to JRPG combat.
The game follows Luke fon Fabre, a sheltered noble suddenly thrust into a world of political intrigue, prophecy, and identity. What begins as a coming-of-age tale evolves into a layered story about free will, sacrifice, and what it truly means to live as oneself. Its cast of companions — from Tear and Jade to Guy and Anise — are among the most beloved in the franchise, with arcs that continue to resonate deeply with fans.
Gameplay combined fluid real-time combat with strategic depth, letting players move freely in battle — a breakthrough at the time. The voice acting, animated cutscenes, and sweeping soundtrack helped establish Tales of the Abyss as not just another RPG, but one of the defining Tales experiences of its generation.
Yet despite its legacy, Tales of the Abyss remains trapped on aging hardware, with no modern PC release. For many fans, especially outside Japan, this makes it increasingly difficult to experience one of the series’ most impactful stories.
Bringing Tales of the Abyss to GOG would preserve this classic, introduce it to a new generation of RPG players, and ensure that one of the finest Tales games finally gets the accessibility and recognition it deserves on PC — DRM-free and built to last.
