My parents bought me this (along with the novel, Rama II) many years ago. As a young kid, exploring the alien ship was equal parts fascinating and frightening. Approaching it again later, I actually got somewhere, avoiding all the trash bots and roaming centipedes to a puzzle terminal. It was relatively simple - you just have to do maths to progress. The twist? You don't do it with numbers, you instead have colours. This blew my mind at the time, and opened me up to try and understand things from, literally, an alien perspective.

I had the 3x CD PC version and one of the CD got smashed. :( I recall play this with my mate and trying to add in hexadecimal for one of the puzzles. I'd love to give this another try.

Did I ever fall in love with this game as a teenager. The story is basically the same as RAMA II by Gentry Lee (NOT Arthur C. Clarke!), The game is better because the player explores the ship... instead of following a bunch of pathetic characters and their petty personal dramas. The puzzles are all inventory and logic. I remember the math machine puzzles. Oh God do I remember them! There's a section that teaches you how two alien number systems work, challenging you to solve basic arithmetic in base-8 and base-16. I stayed up late at night figuring out these number systems by hand, created my own method of counting like an alien and how each number would be represented, and I won! I got through every single one of those puzzles and I was proud! ...until I later read the "alien" number systems were actually hexadecimal and octal, and all I had to do was write down the equations and go to Windows' scientific calculator. I am still proud I figured it out by hand. Alas RAMA has a critical flaw: the last 25% is on a time limit! If you don't set everything up right from the start, odds are you will save your game in an unwinnable state. I actually had to go through the game twice before I was able to reach the end scene with enough time to disarm the bomb. It's impossible to enjoy the wonder of exploring this alien environment with a ticking clock telling you to hurry up, and this keeps the game from being great. In spite of this flaw, it's still a good game. Logical puzzles, mysterious environment to explore, awe-inspiring visuals and very cool aliens. The hall of Avians is humbling and made me feel honored to be there. It deserves a rerelease.

I had a memory of this games trailer, had watched in many times on a demo disc when I was younger. but had forgotten the name years ago. Had been hoping to work out what it was again, and here it is, and while it has aged, it still looks very interesting and deserves a rescue.
AKA How I spent my summer vacation learning to think in base 16. The little bits where Arthur C. Clarke pops up to admonish you for dying in some particularly foolish way are a hidden treasure.

This game is one of those beautiful gems. I picked this up shortly after meeting Gentry Lee when he spoke at my college. I'd love to see this title on GOG because it is such a gem. I've read all the books in the main Rama series, and have the last one of those books, which was signed by Gentry Lee himself.
I remember playing this as a kid. I never was able to finish it, but I always wanted to. I loved the setting, and I loved the challenge of it. I actually still have the old CD's My dad gave them to me when we found it because he knew I liked the game. I remember I found a patch on the web somewhere to get it to run on modern computers and booted it up. but that was back with windows 8, and it would crash still and wasn't the most reliable patch. I haven't tried again. I would love to get another chance to conquer it.
Man! I really wanna replay this forgotten gem so badly. Myst-like game, nice puzzles and... Arthur C. Clarke himself!! Please GOG. Bring It back!!!

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.

Dune
DuneDune is a 1992 video game, based upon Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. Developed by Cryo Interactive, is the first of the Dune computer games. Dune blended adventure with economic and military strategy, and is considered by many the most immersive Dune computer game. Loosely following the story of the novel, the game casts the player as Paul Atreides, with the ultimate goal of driving the Harkonnen from Planet Dune, while managing spice extraction, military, and later, ecology through the native Fremen tribes. As the player progresses, his troops are equipped with weapons from "crysknives" to atomics, tap into Paul's latent psychic powers, and get acquainted with such characters from the book as Chani and Liet-Kynes.
