I have soooo many fond memories of this game! I first encountered it at a summer camp. The computer lab had a bunch of computers that had a variety of educational, kid-friendly games installed. Monkey Shines was the highlight of the bunch, and all the computers had the full version!
The game is really difficult (at least for a bunch of 9-year-olds), and we didn't have much time to play, so we never really got very far through the game. But it stuck in my brain, and a few years later I found a site where I could download it on my personal computer. And that was my first introduction to shareware! Only one world was available, so I played that world over and over again.
The game has surprisingly challenging platforming, often involving moving and dissolving platforms. The obstacles are all random sprites, from flying saucers to zombies to office chairs. There's no map and the levels are labyrinths with one-way passages. You have to learn each level's layout through trial and error, and figure out a path to collect all the keys and get to the exit before the timer runs out! It's a lot like an old-school Metroid-vania, except you have no way to defeat enemies. All you can do is time your jumps perfectly!
At some point, I got my hands on a key for the full version, and eventually I managed to beat one of the five built-in worlds. But every now and then I get the urge to go back and try again. I want to see if my gaming skills have leveled up enough to actually get through this game, and possibly also try some of the fan levels that were posted online. And most importantly: this game has a KILLER soundtrack! Those sick grooves kept things fun as you die over and over and over again trying to navigate this game's endless mazes! I'd love to see this game make a return!
