Description
A huge Japanese coin-op hit developed by HOT-B in 1989, the game was later renamed Cloud Master when released outside Japan on the Sega Master System. It subsequently appeared on NES, and the PC Engine. This upgraded release of the original arcade version includes HD ready elements by developer Starfish-SD, the company formed by the original HOT-B development team. For the first time in the series history, you can tag in a friend and soar across China with a friend in local Co-op. There’s nothing more retro-classic than sharp pixel art, effortlessly rendered in HD. Enjoy the aesthetic that made this game a retro hit. Enemies drop Power-ups that allow you to fly faster and shoot harder. Defeat Mid-Boss enemies and gain access to a special attack shop that unlocks devastating abilities. Explore 5 stages of mythical landscapes, and fight against legendary creatures based on classic Chinese Folklore. Live, worldwide leaderboards for both single player and Co-op.

Cute, but not worth the pain

I played this on Master System back in '92 and I guess I was charmed by the cute, Chinese folk-lore, because even on Master System it was utterly merciless and it seems more so in this re-release, supposedly matching the difficulty of the original arcade release. So I bought it, played for about half and hour and thought "Screw it, this ain't cute anymore". So if you make it through to the stage 1 boss, the Phoenix, he covers the screen with missiles that actually rebound from the left edge of the screen and hit you in the arse. Then you're sent back the middle of the stage(at best). You're stripped back down to minimum firepower and speed, though you're of course able to regain some of that on the way back to the Phoenix, but it's a drudge having to do that every time the Phoenix kills you. After a while I start to feel like an idiot for going to my death again and again and wonder how stupid I must've been as a 12 year old to get killed about a million times before getting to the end.

Arcade version of Cloud Master

This runs fine. It's a generic arcade shooter. If you've ever played "Cloud Master" on the SMS, then you already know what to expect. No control issues, no graphic issues, no hiccups. it can be a bit challenging, but its an arcade game from the 80's - it was made specifically to grab your attention and take your money. If people are docking points because its "too hard", then thats on them. My only gripe is that I wish they would have included the home versions as bonuses, but you can emulate those easily anyway.

Everything wrong with old SHMUPs

Its like I say above, this game has a bit of everything that made old SHMUPs a nightmare to play... It delves far too much into bullet hell territory, bosses drag on for far too long, and of course: you lose all your weapons when you die. The game has good controls, charming graphics, good music, and a really cool theme, but sadly these good points cannot compensate for how nightmarish and unpolished the gameplay is. I can only recommend this game to people who can tolerate the failings of old SHMUP games, otherwise stay away from this. Now the interesting thing is this game actually got a remake. Ever see a generic looking game called The Monkey King: The Legend Begins in the Wii section of used game stores? That is a remake of this game! Despite what the generic box art says, the game actually has a very well drawn and adorable graphical style. It also makes the gameplay actually bearable and fun. It probably makes the game TOO easy and it has some tacked on motion controls, but I think I'd rather play a game that is too easy than one that is too hard.

The game is great. Retroism not so.

This is a great game: that, I remember from thirty-and-some years ago when I played it at the arcade. The port is fine. I don't know if the graphics and settings are those of the Sega Master System version or the arcade's (I'd say the former), but the soul of the game is the one I knew. There is no reason to complain about the game posing a serious challenge — nor is the idea that it does so "because it was a coin-op, meant to extract money from players —: the difficulty is both fair and balanced, while it is also as stern as it should. The gameplay and game design are the strong points here: this could seem a game like one or two hundred other ones released in its age, but there is something crucial to it elevating it. So, why 4 stars? First, it is by no means a masterpiece in itself. SECOND: Retroism did the kind of publishing operation that reveals GLARING corner... or cost, cutting. This is unexpected, undeserved by both a game like this and who decides to take on its challenge, and blameworthy. It is a poor edition, with most controllers working poorly, relatively, or not at all. I will remember Retroism in a negative light because of the compatibility issues with controllers; the game, however, is playable with some of them (and some patience).

A painful journey with no options

Not recommended. Yes its a remake of an old Master System game. I rather play the original, because this version here is far to hard. I play hard games on old consoles, and i know that said games are not a breath, but when a game is hard it needs also to be fair. This remake here isnt fair. If you die, and its a one hit game, then you re set back to the beginning of the stage & stripped down and lose all power ups. The collision detection of the player is very unclear and the merciless and spawning of the enemies is an isult to any player. I tried 30 minutes to beat stage 1, but i couldnt manage it. The boss shots projectile that bounces of the edge. The game is bullet hell unfair and insulting The cute sprite art and the generic music cant save this atrocity. I dont do reviews normally, but i have to warn people about this. Bionic Commando on the NES is childs play compared to this. You blast off the Fuhrers face like a triple time before even ever beat level 1 of this really unfair game. We like all challenges, but we dont have time to spend on unfair and bad designed videogames.
