Gruntz

Gruntz (1999)

by Monolith Productions
Genres:Strategy, Puzzle
Themes:Comedy
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:Take control of the Gruntz, a lovable and annoying batch of creatures trying to find their way home. After fleeing through a wormhole to avoid an attack by their evil cousins, the Disgruntled, they are stranged in a strange world and have to fight their way back home. The game is half-puzzle, half-strategy. Your Gruntz move around the map collecting items, activating switches and killing Disgruntledz. The overall goal in the single player, or Questz, game is to recover 36 pieces of the warpstone. There are four pieces scattered in each of 8 different worlds. I am very nostalgic to this game - especially dialogues in Polish version. Very cheesy and childish but that's the main appeal. I would also like to try it in English and get some jokes I couldn't when I was a kid.

This game was my childhood - was an add-in to a magazine. Spent many hours staring into the CRT figuring out the puzzles. Cute characters, numerous shoutouts to other monolith games (captain claw, get medieval etc.)

We used to play this on my big brother's Pentium III. Gosh, those were the days. The game is clever and filled with unforgettable one-liners and quips from the gruntz you moved around, like when you made them use the shovel "Mom always said I'd be digging ditches". The voices were brilliant and funny and I'd love to see this available.

Really fun mix of strategy and puzzles that I could play with my dad and sister back in the day. The colorfull themed maps, the secret hunting and the general vibe of these silly creatures that were as fast to chop each other up with swords as to play with a jack-in-a-box or ride a bicycle, all made it a standout title for me, and honestly, it's still pretty unique today. The polish voices were awesome and some of the things the Gruntz said entered common parlance in my and my friend's house ("Niesamowite! Łopata!" to name just one), while others still live rent free in my head, along other great video game voice lines. Honestly, seeing it already have over 1.5k votes at the time of writing, already makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, because I long though this game some obscure forgotten gem, but having it on GoG, and running it without issues on modern hardware would be awesome.

I've been playing this game on and off for over 25 yearz now. The game is fun and FUNNY! Seriously it's one of the funniest gamez I have ever played. The graphicz and voicez are amazing. The puzzlez are fun as well, not too easy, not too hard, depending on your play style. If you want to 100% it be prepared to use a walkthrough as some of the latter missionz are really tricky. :) I would love to see this game here. PLEASE GOG!!
I'm walking spikes waaaahaah Best and my first strategy game I played on the PC and would love to reply it on morden hardware. Goo straw FTW and all the amazing jokes (if a bit out dated)

Bought this game in 1999. I had the BIG box and the guide book and it amazing. Played it fully many many times, but today my CD is not in enough quality to be able to install it. I had the polish dubbing! I would love to play it again...
Gruntz is, simply, a one of a kind gem for me. Whether it is for the brainstorm puzzlez in Questz, or a niche real time strategy in Battlez, game also livez rent free in my head due to so many funny one linerz, despite many of them being cheesy, 4th wall breaking and probably outdated for today. A blast from the past, for sure. Even though I haven't tried the following because I waz a kid back then, adding custom levelz for both modez or playing against other playerz can surely keep it fresh. There iz a forum dedicated to thiz game that providez both said custom levelz and guidez for online play.

Not only is this is a great game in it's own right, it's also a notable evolutionary dead end for the RTS genre. It represents a path not travelled, and I could see someone with some vison taking the idea of a puzzle RTS like this and creating something new and interesting. Pieces like this are worth picking up, and re-examining for modern inspiration.
One of my favorite games from childhood. Played it all the time with my brother trying to solve the puzzles or Free For All against bots. No RTS game has really felt the same.
Those games also need your vote!

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Lufia II: Rise of the SinistralsLufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals serves as a prequel to Lufia & the Fortress of Doom, unfolding its events ninety-nine years before. The narrative delves into the origins of the series' antagonists, the Sinistrals, a group of super-humans. Players take on the role of the ancestor of Maxim, the protagonist from the first game, as he embarks on a quest after encountering Iris, a mysterious woman. Maxim seeks other heroes to join forces in preventing the Sinistrals from wreaking havoc and destroying the world. Like its predecessor, Rise of the Sinistrals follows the Japanese-style turn-based RPG format with an infusion of puzzle elements. The game incorporates intricate puzzles into its dungeon designs, requiring players to use various items and accessories for solving. Additionally, it introduces the "Capsule Monsters" system, allowing summoned monsters to participate in battles. These creatures evolve through the consumption of weapons, armour, or special fruits. Unlike the first game, dungeons in Rise of the Sinistrals lack random battles, with enemies visibly moving on-screen.
