I first played this on the 360, bought it cheap and loved it.
It's an open world driving game (not racing) where you can explore a gigantic map and unlock vehicles along the way, ranging frim dirt bikes to quads, monster trucks, hauler tractors, cars, buggies, and others to be discovered, with races on and off road, with checkpoint races, eilmination races, lap races, sprint challenges and so on.
The AI is not very good, both rubberbandy and programmed to know the track, so it has its share of frustratrions when you're hunting for stars so as to unlock the helipads to the new regions instead of driving manually but at least on PC there are the debug options to get everything so you can just drive around for fun, and fun it is.
Once you forrgo the race events, it's a gigantic escapism fantasy of driving around wilderness and abandoned areas.
I insist it's a driving game more than a racing game because the physics are fairly developed and you don't drive a bike like you do a buggy, physics play a part and vehicle inertia is to be taken into account since there is no nitro boost or power up to be found.
I wouldn't go as far as saying there is real skill involved, and the difficulty curve is all over the place, but it's a unique feeling among open world driving games.
Since Test Drive Unlimited is dead and there's ni sign of Burnout Paradise ever releasing here, I'd love to at least see Fuel preserved, instead of relying on my own backups. The saddest part is the game was delisted and never properly supported just due to Codemasters acting miserly.
While the GameSpy servers are gone, there are tricks to play online and the game has seen several enhancements thanks to the REFUELED and RESHADED mods.
Maybe not the greatest driving game but a cool piece of late 2000s video game history that deserves to be preserved.
