This entry in the Final Fantasy series does not nearly get as much love as it deserves. Yes, it's very linear, and very straight-foward, yes the Cutscenes are long, but the story and characters are great, and the gameplay can have some strategy to it. Switching between different Paridigm styles is a great way to add variety and it allows the player to use different techniques and abilities for different situations.
As for the story, Lightning is a fantastic protagonist, and the interactions between the characters are fascinating and interesting, the only downside I would say for the story is it can get very confusing with the various terminology used in the story. There is a ton of reading involved to get acquainted with the Lore and world of this game, but for me, I didn't mind it all that much as I'm an avid reader.
With that being said, I would love to see this game come to GOG, along with a few other Final Fantasy titles, like FF IX, VII, and possibly XV, as I'm a fan of Noctis and his story.
Speaking of FFXV, this was part of a project produced back in the mid-2000's known as Fabula Nova Chrystallis which included this game, along with XV formerly known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and of course Type-0 which released on the PSP. Tetsuya Nomura was initially in charge of Versus XIII but sadly he had stepped away from the project, instead going on to work on Kingdom Hearts III, with Hajime Tabata working on Versus XIII and renaming it to Final Fantasy XV, a new mainline title. Final Fantasy XIII is possibly and sadly the only game with the remnants of the FNC Lore intact, and it was somewhat continued in XIII-2 and Lightning Returns, two other decent games in the XIII series.
Overall despite it's mixed reputation among fans, it's a worthy addition to the Final Fantasy series, and should be reserved as one of the better games of the 7th Generation.
