700 years before the events of Ys I & II, the land of Ys was on the brink of destruction. Demons came in droves and forced the twin Goddesses who ruled the land to whisk their subjects away from the surface, into the safe embrace of the clouds. The demons were persistent, however, erecting a massive tower in pursuit. The battle that raged upon the ground had begun ascending for a second round up above.
One day, amidst this turmoil, the Goddesses stole away into the night, vanishing from Ys altogether. And there's only one place they could have gone: the Devil's Tower.
A search party of knights and sorcerers was hastily formed and dispatched to the surface in hopes of retrieving these runaway deities. Among its members were apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and troubled sorcerer Hugo Fact.
This is their story. Or at least, it's how each of them remembers it.
Expanding upon the gameplay elements introduced in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and further developed in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin perfects the formula by adding different styles of play and new features never before seen in the Ys universe. I have GOG galaxy set to English. But when I installed this game, the text is in Japanese in may places and the voice acting was French. There is no instruction on how to change the languages either. I used GOG galaxy to install. Then uninstalled and downloaded the offline files and installed again, choosing English at the language. Still majority of text in game is still Japanese. I have searched Google and asked AI to no avail. GOG galaxy says the language is in English but the settings app is entirely Japanese with no apparent way to change it.
I am very disappointed in this game and am asking for a refund. It is unplayable unless you can read Japanese.
I want to enjoy this game. It looks like everything that I want to get from a JRPG. Yet, the cut scenes, OMG the cut scenes are a PITA. They are long, annoying and cause my most modern laptop with a dedicated graphics card to crash like a lead zepplien. I am sorry, but this is a major faux pas in my book now a days for any game. If it crashes and I have to suffer through the 5-6 minute cut scenes including the intro video over and over and over again without an option to hit a button to skip. Well sorry, but you don't be installed on my computer again. Even worse though is that I heard plenty of good things about the whole series and this one game makes me leary of trying it out even one.
Oh and localization, all the voices overs for me are in French???? The on screen text is in English, but is it really localized if the voices are one language and the written text is another.
Last complaint is about trying to get my controls to work. It seems that the game doesn't like any of my mice. From a nice old wired version to the bluetooth enabled one. So trying to figure out the controls on a fly with no options in the game to change them says that this is not a game worth my time and I am sorry I spent money on it.
I`ve never seen\played a game more unstable than Ys Origin. I have installed and reinstalled this game multiple times and was not capable of finishing the game once. The worst part about that experience was having to sit through 3 to 4.5 minutes long cutscenes every time the crashed just for it to crash again and again. I do not care about how good the story is, how great the combat system feels, how good the game looks, etc, the constant crashing and utter lack of stablility of the game have completely soured my experience with it, I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND.
Those 7 minutes were a text crawl with backstory into an FMV with crappy anime music and nonsenical anime movie scenes into ANOTHER GODDAMN TEXTCRAWL

Even the Mario series has some semblance of change. Sadly, this is yet another 3D Ys game... though not as good. The gameplay only really picks up about halfway through, the pacing is terrible - It is very common to pick up items that negate effects that you've only just barely been exposed to; Upgrades come by so quickly that you're nearly maxed on the first spell in merely one hour. The music consists of uninspired elevator-music remixes of the original Ys music with bland MIDI. The story: oh-so-predicable, full of angst, without any personality other than the flat cookie-cutter shapes from the 'Generic Anime Book of Design' (and complete with dull, generic anime portraits, too!)
The Ys series hasn't really been a series that evolves. They jumped to 3D with new mechanics, but it took many years to get that far. This game carries the same tropes (and even some animations/boss techniques) wholesale from the other, better, 3D games in the series. And at least Adol is typically mute in his appearances: This dialogue is atrocious enough, but now I have to read the main character either state the obvious or just say any random character's name in an unfortunately common form of terrible dialogue writing.
"You said that the medallion is in this tower?" "Feena..." "You really think I can get this key in that room?" "Feena..." "True strength is being with your friends!" "Feena..."
Too much is said, and none of it is full of any life: Just regurgitated bile from 'How to pad your content with soulless drivel 101'. The boss battles do slightly make up for the shortcomings of this game: They're fun and mostly unique. Unfortunately, there lacks polish on a few of them as awkward camera transitions and glitchy collision detection has made one or two fights quite the annoyance. All the rest of the dungeoning is pretty much copy/paste from the others 3D Ys games with almost no variation.
Ultimately, this installment feels cheap and barely satisfies, like a bland bag of chips.
