700 years before the events of Ys I & II, the land of Ys was on the brink of destruction. Demons came in droves and forced the twin Goddesses who ruled the land to whisk their subjects away from the surface, into the safe embrace of the clouds. The demons were persistent, however, erecting a massive tower in pursuit. The battle that raged upon the ground had begun ascending for a second round up above.
One day, amidst this turmoil, the Goddesses stole away into the night, vanishing from Ys altogether. And there's only one place they could have gone: the Devil's Tower.
A search party of knights and sorcerers was hastily formed and dispatched to the surface in hopes of retrieving these runaway deities. Among its members were apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and troubled sorcerer Hugo Fact.
This is their story. Or at least, it's how each of them remembers it.
Expanding upon the gameplay elements introduced in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and further developed in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin perfects the formula by adding different styles of play and new features never before seen in the Ys universe. Best described as an arcade-like platformer RPG with Metroidvania elements and a complex, multi-faceted narrative, Ys Origin is the perfect mix of action, exploration and story. Screen-filling bosses with complex AI, unique platforming elements, innovative puzzles and a deeply involving mystery await within the wildly varied confines of this classic Ys dungeon.
Come see how long you can last in the Devil's Tower...
Three unique playable characters in story mode, with additional variations unlockable through other modes.
Five difficulty levels ranging from "Very Easy" for casual players to "Nightmare" for true Ys masters.
Unlockable "Time Attack" and "Boss Rush" modes for showing off ultimate boss-taming abilities.
Unlockable Arena Mode pits players against massive hordes of enemies for unique gameplay rewards.
Minutely configurable high-resolution graphics with true widescreen support.
Fully adjustable controls supporting virtually any USB gamepad, as well as a standard keyboard and mouse setup.
The game itself looks a bit dated, but the gameplay is still quite enjoyable. It doesn't support modern resulutions and downscales your display to something pretty horrible and 4:3, but I was very plesantly surprised to see it running at a stable 144FPS on my matching 144Hz screen without any issues.
Progression wasn't quite perfect. At some points it felt like I need to grind a bit more to deal with a boss or progress through the next area, but it wasn't too bad. Compared to the time wasting standards of even some modern JRPG's, it was just a minor inconvenience.
The plot itself felt surpriringly good. Hardly the greatest story ever written, but generally fairly good. The characters weren't the usual generic stereotypes. The dialogue wasn't cringeworthy. It felt like real people struggling with real situations.
Overall, fairly good and worth a recommendation.
Wow... amazing game.
A nice dungeon crawler in the style of Zelda. With God of War-like combat.
The game looks nice too. Don't forget to use the "configuration tool" in the Start Menu > Programs > Ys Origin to config the grafhics settings.
I've played 4 other Ys games and honestly this doesn't feel like one of them. There's too much artificial difficulty here with forced grinding and artificial difficulty by addint 'bullet hell' mechanics where you have to keep dodging barrages of projectiles after a certain specific boss fight. In other games, it felt like I was actually fighting bosses, here I feel like I'm fighting the developers' laziness. Instead of looking at boss patterns and seeing where the chance to retaliate is (the first FEW bosses are like this and beating them feels good) eventually you will have to start dodging screen spam of projectiles that bounce around everywhere and some that also track you, with almost no chance to even attack the boss, or maybe just take a quick swipe, before having to keep running to avoid getting swarmed or possible animation locked by your attacks.
And let me just add one completely obnoxious thing here that does not do the game any favors: there will be one point where you ahve to beat some special mobs to advance the story, mobs that you have to be at least a certai level to beat because otherwise you will only be doing 1 damage to them with your attacks to try to whittle down their hundreds of hp, so you will HAVE TO grind exp for like 3-4 levels just so you can start doing 7-10 range of damage to them per attack. I didn't have to grind any levels before this, I felt like the game was staying at level in difficulty all around. You will know when you reach this stupid change in gameplay once you effectively get to "a bridge and a floating tower." You will know when you see it.
What a waste of a Ys title.
The art looks good and the combat is fun. You need to play the game three times with three different characters to see the full story and everything the game has to offer.
The problem is that while the story beats are different, everything else is pretty much the same: the same enemies, the same locations, and nearly the same boss battles. It made what should have been a fun, intense, short game become monotonous. The game timer said my subsequent playthroughs were getting shorter but they felt like they were getting longer.
The end of my experience was soured because the final boss on the final playthrough bugged out, so I didn't get to fully beat the game. It made my second and third playthroughs seem like they were a waste of time.
I'd say, if you buy it, don't feel required to beat the game more than once. You're still getting a fun experience.
