Inferior to The New Order

The New Order is probably my favorite single-player FPS of all time. They did something really incredible with the writing, music, and character/world development that really makes it an all time classic. This sequel, on the other hand, is not very good. The only thing that this sequel does better is the shooting. The shooting is great. Everything else is a step back from its predecessor. Levels are poorly signposted so it's easy to get lost. Stealth is given as an option but you're often railroaded into firefights anyway. A lot of really interesting characters are introduced in slick cutscenes and then never utilized. Familiar characters from the previous game are given very flimsy story arcs, and just dropped (looking at you, Fergus). The tone is all over the place, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the plot and writing really doesn't come through to support it well. The pacing is all over the place, and the villain quite simply sucks compared to The New Order. Somehow the final boss was less interesting than the other combat setpieces littered throughout the campaign; I didn't even realize it was a final boss until the credits rolled. They did such a terrible job with the character development, emotional beats, and plotting I was amazed to find out it's the same writing team as The New Order. I don't understand how the same writers can throw away all the great stuff they built up over their last outing and replace it with...whatever this is. This game suffers from a lot of the same problems Bioshock Infinite does. There's a lot of slick presentation and interesting themes on display, but if you make any effort to think carefully about anything, it just comes apart. "But it's a shooter!" you may think, "cut it some slack." That's fine. But it still doesn't change the fact that they did better in the past, and failed to build on what made that game a classic.

Why?

Probably one of the most confused games out there. After doing a decent job with TNO and TOB, it feels like Machine Games took a step in the wrong direction in almost every way possible. The biggest issue to first mention would be the overall amount of story content crammed in the player's face. A ton of cutscenes and "interactable" cutscenes generally breaks the flow of the gameplay which is bad on its own but only gets worse given it has much worse writing that the former games. The game wants to have its cake and eat it too with its portrayal of Nazis to the point where they feel like neither a threat or comedic given the obnoxiously frequent slapstick the game has. Unfortunately, even your characters either old or new feel like they have this obnoxious comedic angle as well at times to the point where it just destroys the development for people like Wyatt and Feargus from the first game. The gameplay could potentially save it but it unfortunately can't either. Gunplay itself feels good to use but the level design is so screwed now, expect to be in cover a lot if you don't want to get shredded by bullets on harder difficulties (and stealth has barely been touched on either so it's just the boring takedown system like most modern games). Perk system is there and is still as obnoxious as in TNO (in fact, you're doing even more menial tasks like just playing the game normally so you'd unlock things that you should have from the get go). Most of all, even when you feel like you can start enjoying the gameplay for what it is, the story rips you right out of that to cram its story in your face because the narrative is DEFINITELY why I play a violent over the top FPS. Just play RTCW if you want the best Wolfenstein has to offer. Better level design, actual Indiana Jones tongue and check attitude at times, and BJ at his best as a mute while not being a mopey as hell.

Colossal disappointment

If you want a fun "shoot the nazis" game and a good story, New Order/Old Blood bundle is almost always dirt cheap. New Colossus is a fun little shooter that takes a stinking wet dump on the previous game's story. At the end of New Order BJ built a revolution and dealt a huge blow to the nazis, but in New Colossus the nazis are shown to be even MORE powerful than before and BJ and friends have to build another revolution again, making the previous story's events almost pointless. Characters are one dimensional when they're not annoying, the tone is less serious and more goofy, the dialog and voice acting is bland at best and cringy at worst, and the plot... good Lord is the plot terrible. How bad is this plot? (SPOILERS, but you shouldn't care) Well in the game there is a flying fortress called Odin that our heroes have to access to stop the nazis, except they need the passcodes in order to get inside. Where are the passcodes? On a nazi base ON THE PLANET VENUS. So the good guys steal a space ship from Area 52 (yes...ugh) and get BJ access to Venus because Hitler (yes THAT Hitler) is making a movie on Venus and luckily BJ looks EXACTLY like a famous actor Hitler wants to cast. So BJ travels all the way to FREAKING Venus and acquires the codes, and back on Earth our heroes find out that the code that grants access to Odin is "Valhalla". Yes. Instead of just taking a basic guess, our heroes are so stupid they had to GO TO ANOTHER PLANET to figure out that the password for a fortress called "ODIN" was "Valhalla". Who ever wrote this story should be walking dogs or flipping burgers.

Purchase this version!!!

To properly enjoy this game, you only need the base game, is a really good and exciting shooter, with cool characters, great story (even more for a shooter), and great gunplay, you are going to experience every shoot in this game!!! But the gameplay is not as good as it's predecessors, that is why I don't give it 5 stars!!! So I will make it short, PURCHASE THIS VERSION, THE BASE GAME, AND FORGET ABOUT THE DLCs... Buy you a drink instead with that money!!!

What went wrong?

Was really excited for this one but turned out to be a big bummer. Inferior to New Order in every way. Stack a bunch of annoying characters on top of an already less than stellar experience and you got a game where you finish and go "What the hell is this?". Direction is clearly in the wrong way. tl/dr: Its disappointing. Get The New Order instead.
