Modern Werewolves & New Reasons to Rage

Halfway through the game and I am deeply impressed by the use of contemporary issues to tell a story of alienation, rage, and creeping despair. Using Harano (the paralysing sense of being unable to fight insurmountable issues) as a core mechanic pulls in the tabletop systems effectively while tying in the core theme of the story. It's a balancing act of being a creature of violence and rage fighting a system of laws, contracts, and bureaucracy and realising you're not the right tool for the job. I disagree with another reviewer who thinks the World of Darkness isn't about modern politics or personal identity. The entire theme of WoD is the darkness affecting and caused by humanity, and refugees, oppressed minorities, and corrupt politics and business are all a key part of that. Werewolf has always been a game of spiritual environmentalist monsters fighting against the selfishness and violence built into modern life. Werewolf problems are companies destroying the earth, monsters feeding on human bigotry, and the feeling of the world dying around us. The game isn't subtle, but werewolves rarely are. What it does do is use contemporary experiences, leaning on the terror and hope of people fleeing violence and oppression, and then trying to establish themselves in a new place. All of that complicated by being part of an isolated community of monsters. It's not a perfect game, but it's one of the better visual novels I've played, and one of the best WoD adaptations to capture the feeling of the world.

Killing our children is an accident LOL

As a quite spolier, the story follows Hearth of the Forest, with almost the same game system, and you should start with HotF, mainly because Purgatory feels a dlc of it... A DLC because it's less long and good (I had given 5 stars to HotF): good: _ the game system is more complete _ the background setting is original (it's not the "America is great and strong" usual propaganda like in so many games) quite bad: _ the scenes feel short and detached from scenario (and you'll haless than 7 hours games) _ the writting is weird bland (or the garou are so used to kill their parents?) However, I played it in one session, I couldn't let it go before the ending.

a pretty good furry adventure

this was my first real experience with the side of WOD, and is pretty alright The atmosphere and visuals is the games strongest part, so much so that i hope other visual novels in the World of Darkness franchise takes inspiration from purgatory in the visual department The story is a bit unsubtle, but as someone who actually lives in Europe and has some understanding of the issues of immigration, i feel its not inacurrate to real life, with the exception of the werewolf stuff of course. my only real complaints are that the characters can feel a little flat sometimes and that the main villains the fomori, aren't really that interesting personality-wise, i'm not saying they must be morally gray or something, just that they seem to lack the "pop" that other WoD antagonists have, if that makes any sense. But overall its a decent and actually pretty concise experience

An Improvement Over HOTF

I felt that Purgatory was the strongest story yet from Different Tales. It had better pacing than Heart of the Forest. It still had the same great lore as well as did a good job of incorporating characters from Heart of the Forest. I felt that Purgatory was less rushed and had a better fleshed out narrative. I would say that the only thing I would say was lacking was the main villain's motivation. You are after them due to a murder they committed but by the end I can't really say it was well explained why they did it or what they had hoped to gain from it. Purgatory also added a depression factor to the things to manage along with rage, willpower, etc. It was an interesting addition but to be fair the game would have worked just as well without it and it was very easy to keep in check. I also have to wonder what the developers have against the citizens of Poland. In both Werewolf games so far the people of Poland are depicted largely as hostile and antagonistic and the protagonists are foreigners who come in to tell them how to run their affairs and enter their country illegally. Just seems like the developers have a very specific message to say and an axe to grind. I played Purgatory on Linux. It never crashed and I didn't notice any spelling errors or any bugs. The save system was an auto save system. It has one save slot that gets saved over each time. One improvement over HOTF is that the game now tells you when it's saving where Heart of the Forest didn't. I would have preferred a manual save system with multiple slots. The game ran great and the issue with high GPU usage that heart of the Forest had has been fixed for me. VRAM usage was much higher in Purgatory than in heart of the Forest but it's nothing even low end GPUs can't manage. There is a setting for resolution and one other graphics option. Game Settings Used: 2560x1440, highest GPU Usage: 6-49 % VRAM Usage: 1392-1627 MB CPU Usage: 4-8 % RAM Usage: 2.4-2.8 GB

Solid werewolf game again

The game is as good as Heart of the forest, but it takes a different direction sort of. Again, it's like a pen and paper RPG but this time with more choice options for your character and with a new element of "Harano" which is apparently something like a werewolf depressive disorder or trauma and it affects your choices and options during the game. But the game itself has enough variety for you to choose what the story and the events will be like, so it's entirely possible to keep your depression stat at minimum throughout the entire game or see how the scenes turn out if your depression is stronger, it's all up to you. Also the game has its main plot but there are two ways to go through it, each revealing a different aspect of the overall plot, and each of the path having a variety of options to play too, depending either on your choice, your character stats, or the relations with other characters in the game. So the game has a lot of variety for multiple playthroughs. The story of the game is pretty atmospheric and engaging and again like in the Heart of the forest the game explains its terminology and background information in notes under keywords, so the writing is not padded with some lore dumps and it's still accessible to people who know nothing about the tabletop werewolf thing. The plot itself concerns itself both with humane and environmental aspect of current events, just like the werewolf tabletop and by extension the whole World of Darkness tabletop, and while it might be too heavy handed or too on the nose at points, it's still entertaining and relevant both to the real world events and the world of darkness. What you get with this game is something close to tabletop RPG experience. If you want something like VtM bloodlines with action and running around exploring random stuff, you won't get that. If you expect just a visual novel then you're getting more than that.
