You’re a nobody. An outcast in your own vampiric sect. A political prisoner of no particular value. An immigrant who never found her roots in a city of immigrants. A chainsmoker whose favorite pastime is staring blankly at the streets through the windows of a fast food joint at 4AM. The sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach tells you that you’re doomed, and distorted voices from the shadows seem to agree. The curse of your clan makes interacting with everyday technology difficult. Dissociation is your natural state.

But when New York’s Anarch leader meets a gruesome end, out of all the bloodsuckers in the metropolis, you’re the one picked to investigate. Make no mistake: this is obviously a trap, yet another move in the horrible game of Jyhad, the eternal struggle for power between warring vampire generations. But you’re Lasombra, and if there’s one thing you know, it’s this: if the Ventrue Prince and her followers underestimate you, they’re going to deeply regret it.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York is a visual novel set in the rich universe of Vampire: The Masquerade. It acts as a stand-alone expansion and a companion piece to our previous title, Coteries of New York. While Coteries was a general introduction to the world depicted in the 5th Edition of the hit tabletop role-playing game, Shadows presents a more personal and unique tale.

  • A visual novel tackling themes of personal and political horror, suitable for both Vampire: The Masquerade veterans, and fans of narrative-driven games who are newcomers to the setting.
  • A stand-alone expansion to Coteries of New York. See the familiar metropolis through entirely different eyes. Expect new characters, new locations and a fresh original soundtrack.
  • Play as a member of the Lasombra clan. Formerly vicious foes of the Camarilla, the Magisters decided to search for safety in the ranks of their former enemies. Master the shadows and communicate with the inhabitants of the Other Side, but beware – Oblivion is always lurking out there, ready to devour you whole.
  • Explore the streets of the Big Apple. While you search for ways to satiate your bloodthirst, catch glimpses of various fascinating vignettes and forge connections with the eccentric inhabitants of the city. One playthrough won’t be enough to see it all.
  • Shape your mind, shape your fate. You used to avoid defining yourself and tried to stay neutral, but given your situation, you can no longer afford to do so. The choices you make will alter the way you think, and your thinking will alter the paths you take.

If it’s called Vampire: The Masquerade, does that mean you have something in common with World of Darkness, Bloodlines 2, Redemption, the cult tabletop RPG system, or...?

Yes. Shadows of New York is set in the same shared universe, but offers stand-alone experiences and stories. You may spot some connections with the other titles, but Shadows is not a sequel to any existing products. The World of Darkness is a media franchise and shared universe, shaped by various creators and participants, meaning: all stand-alone stories play into a greater whole. Berlin falling to the Anarchs during an official LARP, the Lasombra clan joining forces with the Camarilla in the Vampire: The Masquerade - Chicago By Night 5th Edition sourcebook, Sophie Langley’s plot to take control of New York in Coteries of New York – all of these events subtly influence and interact with each other.

Do I need to play Coteries of New York to understand and enjoy the story of Shadows of New York?

Not at all. Shadows of New York is a stand-alone expansion to Coteries of New York, which means it shares the New York City setting and a large part of the supporting cast with our previous title, but is designed to offer a different experience. Coteries served as an introduction to the basics of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition – it was focused on showcasing different vampire Clans and core concepts of the setting through the point of view of a newly-fledged vampire, a character who did have a defined backstory, but by and large meant to serve as a player avatar.

Shadows of New York is a more personal story, told from the perspective of a well-defined character who’s already integrated into the Kindred society and has a developed inner monologue of her own (which means you influence her personality instead of shaping it). Those who are familiar with Coteries will already know a large part of the cast and catch some references that would otherwise go unnoticed, but those who decide to start with Shadows and get back to Coteries later should be able to enjoy both experiences just as much as they would if they played them in their release order. The two stories are essentially separate, different both tonally and thematically.

Which platforms will Shadows of New York be available on? Will there be a simultaneous release date?

Shadows of New York will launch simultaneously on PC (Windows/Mac OS/Linux), PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in 2020.

Does the game support controllers?

Yes. You’ll be able to play both with mouse and keyboard, as well as with a controller.

Different than its Predecessor

Coteries of New York had its faults but was still obviously crafted with some care and affection for both its material and the role playing culture which was responsible for White Wolf's early success. Its biggest problem was, like many Tell Tale games, in order to retain control over narrative and continuity the developers restricted the player to flavoring what they were served rather than preparing their own fare. Meaningful arcs in the story are predetermined while the player merely elects the path which leads to their eventual revelation. An understandable, if not entirely satisfying, compromise between the time and talent of those working on such projects and what those who will buy it desire. The sequel dispenses with the pretext of player participation in the story. Every five to ten minutes one may be asked for some minor input (like as to how an editor should be told to to fuck off and somewhat later making the vital the choice between "Uh huh." and "Mmmm hmmm."), or taken to the city map with no options other than resting in order to progress the story line between beats, but really the only responsibility asked of the player is to click the continue icon after every line of dialogue. I won't comment as to the characters or story since those are more a matter of taste and preference than execution and polish, but very little in this appealed to me. I was rather hopeful for this release having seen some potential in the first installment, however, forty five minutes of play (of a five hour game) has convinced me I was not their intended audience. For the very young or the very dedicated this may we a worthwhile purchase but I am afraid I cannot recommend it to anyone else. Its simply too mindless and passive an experience to be enjoyable.

Similar to Coteries of New York

This is a standalone visual novel, loosely based off Coteries of New York. Many of the picture slides and characters were reused for this game that was in the previous one. Excluding replaying it, there's about ~5h of gameplay from beginning to end. I do find the main character much more relatable than those you could choose in it's predecessor. In Coteries, your choices had very little to no impact on the overall story. Without replaying it, it's difficult for me to say if that's true of this game or not. Aside from the main character sometimes seeing strange shadows, or some story dialog letting you do something that's more than human, you don't really need to be a vampire in this game. That's not to say it isn't portrayed well, just that it doesn't matter much--it's mostly a game of clue w/ some vampire elements. Overall, I think it's a bit sub par for a visual novel. There are definitely some areas I had wished they had improved on from the first game, which they didn't do, and it's rather short. If you enjoyed Coteries, odds are you will enjoy this game as well.

Bit disappointing but playable

This is a lot like Coteries, just that you only follow one protagonist who is more fleshed out. Which is a good thing, imo. Again the strong parts are the characters, the dialogues between them and little side stories (although I'd say Coteries did a bit better in that department). Unfortunately the games don't focus solely on those, but try to weave some grand conspiracy overarching plot, which gets weird especially towards the end. Trying to pull one "you never would've guessed this shocking reveal" after the other. No, I wouldn't have guessed, cause I see no connection to the rest of the story, so I have absolutely no investment in this mystery. Add to that that the 'narrative' bits still aren't super well written (matter of taste and preferences ofc). My major gripe with both games is not being able to save and reload scenes. Dialogue options are often unclear, so it's easy to pick something you absolutely didn't intend to, being able to reload there would be nice. Or just to find out what's behind a different one without having to replay the entire thing. Also apparently the choices you make during the night apparently affect how you handle the relationship with your partner? Sure makes sense, I always apply the same logic to work/dealing with criminals as to my romantic life /sarcasmOff All in all it's a passable visual novel. If you're into the universe and don't mind okay writing, sure, play it. There's enough I liked about it to finish it, just a lot of things that frustrated me along the way. Lots of potential, I *wish* they had more time to shine things up (and just let me have several save slots *please*). Alternatively I wish this was just 'bad', so I could just ignore it and not be frustrated with a "we b*tch because we love you" impulse... but I guess that's following V:tM tradition ;)

Tale on Rails

Played the first of this series, wasn't thrilled by the linearity of it. However, Shadows was on sale, so I figured I'd give it a shot. 20 minutes in, my first significant choice is fatal. That's not "branching narative" it's the same one dimensional crap. If this was a tabletop session of VtM, you'll throw you coffee in the GM's face and never sit down at a table with them again. Learn to craft something other than jump through the hoops naratives, DD.

Disappointing

The story and writing style are rather poor, even embarrassing at times. Same as it's predecessor. You can really tell what kind of a hipster the writer is by their style and how limited their life experiences are. This is something that it has in common with the newest edition of Vampire the Masquerade however, so maybe it's intentional. Unfortunately a visual novel that fails at story and writing doesn't really have anything else to offer.
