Torment: Tides of Numenera - Legacy Edition

You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2.
  • A Deep, Thematically Satisfying Story. The philosophical underpinnings of Torment drive the game, both mechanically and narratively. Your words, choices, and actions are your primary weapons.
  • A World Unlike Any Other. Journey across the Ninth World, a fantastic, original setting, with awe-inspiring visuals, offbeat and unpredictable items to use in and out of battle, and stunning feats of magic. Powered by technology used in the award-winning Pillars of Eternity by Obsidian Entertainment, the Numenera setting by Monte Cook provides endless wonders and impossibly imaginative locations for you to explore.
  • A Rich, Personal Narrative. Thoughtful and character-driven, the story is epic in feel but deeply personal in substance, with nontraditional characters and companions whose motivations and desires shape their actions throughout the game.
  • Reactivity, Replayability, and the Tides. Your choices matter, and morality in the Ninth World is not a simple matter of “right” and “wrong”. You will decide the fates of those around you, and characters will react to your decisions and reputation. The result is a deeply replayable experience that arises naturally from your actions throughout the game.
  • A New Take on Combat. With the Crisis system, combat is more than just bashing your enemies. Plan your way through hand-crafted set-pieces which combine battles with environmental puzzles, social interaction, stealth, and more.

A decent but average game

I got this through the kickstarter but followed none of the development so my review is based on the game as played. Overall this is a very flawed game but decent story based RPG. To start with the bad, the writing is so voluminous to the point that I was skipping a lot of the non-dialog text. For budget reasons, each dialog box is full of text simply describing the talker or the location. This could have been solved by showing the speaker in the dialog box like in Fallout but I guess they didn't have the money. For most of the game you can essentially skip combat. But there are a few places that your generally going to get into a fight. The problem is that there's no real tutorial for how combat actually works so you end up making guesses on level up whether this abilities is worth getting for the couple of times you'll desperately need it. As for the companions 2 of them are interesting, Aligern and Rhin. They are both interesting as companions and have interesting quests/storylines. Then there's Erritis who is a fun companion but a very light quest. Matkina is also a good companion but has nothing really going on story wise. Tybir is kind of just okay but Callistege is not great. The problem with the companion system is that you can only have 3 at a time and you can't have Callistege and Aligern in the same party. Since Aligern is actually interesting, Callistege falls by the wayside. Plus she doesn't have much of an ongoing storyline. Oom is not good either, kind of just half-assed. For the good, the locations are interesting (although after the first city not very big) and the story is decent until the ending where it falls apart. Overall if you're looking for a budget version of Planescape Torment or just another game similar to the old turn based RPG then you may want to pick this up. Otherwise there are better games out there.

Flawed and Good Adventure/RPG hybrid

Didn't back this on Kickstarter. Business practices aside, the game is really good. The highlights are definitely the world building and the Numenera skill check mechanics. Finally, an RPG that puts just as much focus on dialogue and skill checks as combat! There are MASSIVE walls of text, so if you're not big into reading this is definitely going to be a grueling experience. The sound design is fine. The graphics and art direction are a huge leap forward from Wasteland 2. What of the flaws? The big one is pacing. A common criticism is that there's just too much writing. This is puzzling because people who say this usually agree that the writing is mostly good. This means that the crux of the issues, in my mind, are the hours-long stretches of reading flowery prose without a break and not the volume of writing itself. The first 10 hours or so are a slog and a perfect example of this: there are about five or six sections, each can take up to an hour to talk to everyone, and then you have to factor in running back and forth completing quests which are themselves mostly talking. I think I participated in 3 fights within that time. It doesn't exactly get your heart pumping, and I found my mind wandering if I played for long stretches of time. The next big issue is the performance and let's face it: it's not going to get any better. The last patch was months ago but I'd estimate that 50%(!) of all combat I experienced in this game had at least one critical bug. Many of these were full-on crashes or the engine hangings. This is just insane for a dev to leave the game like this. Performance all around is complete trash. FPS went as high as 144 and as low as 22. What's going on here?? If you can handle these issues, the game itself is interesting and unique. Certainly not a classic, but definitely worth your time.

Mediocrity

Noteworthy positive attributes: Art design. Quantity of environmental interaction. Familiar yet distinct rule/stat system that is robust and offers for a pleasant amount of flexibility in character builds for a game of this length (30-35 hours). Noteworthy negative attributes: Too linear, once you leave a primary location there's no going back. Too many goose chase quests. "Find this person" and then "Find that person." That's most of the quests so far. Can't rearrange party, can't change party leader, can't enter Hide mode outside combat (only inside, which makes no sense), no attacks of opportunity, ranged weapons have too little range. Enemies always seem to have higher initiative and start combat (for most of the game, not later on at least), combat is usually too easy despite you always being horribly outnumbered save for the first possible fight. The game likes to include infinite waves of enemies, forcing you to go interact with something instead of fighting. Infinite waves of enemies is one of the worst game design choices ever. Just the one difficulty mode. Some SJW crap; it makes it a point to make most distinguished figures women. While it is Sci-Fi enough to have distinguished female soldiers, the frequency of them makes its intentions obvious. The role-playing potential is very limited. The most it leads to is different ending slides. Other changes may manifest depending on your actions, but not a whole lot. The game copies Planescape: Torment too much. It is designed to be a replica, which is not a smart way to design games or stories. What works for one story won't necessarily work for another.

Fun Game

The game seems fun so far. The choices and characters are interesting. I havent finished it but hope to get it done soon. The writing has also been good if not verbose. I also just wanted to comment on benzeneboy review. the user claims: "However, after the kickstarter funded and pledges from people like me were locked in, inExile announced that they were changing the combat system from Real-time-with-pause (RTwP) to Turn-based (TB) mechanics. " they are either lying or just cant be bothered to look up the truth. The combat system was voted on: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/09/the-turn-based-tides-of-numenera-torment/ Hopefully this user will be voted down. Its just sad

Only So-so

The game has an interesting story and a rather detailed background. However, the game play itself is far too short. The promised interaction between allies was not realized and was disappointingly shallow. Most crises involve combat rather than utilizing alternate solutions. And it was much too linear. There wasn't a lot of opportunity given to exploration. This is a game with a lot of unrealized potential.
