Avoid at All Costs
I don't throw my hat in the ring much but I absolutely have to here. I love Tomb Raider, the original three are games I can go back to again and again without a single problem. the puzzles take a bit of thought, the combat is clunky but satisfying once you get the hang of it, and Lara is just plain fun to be around. This game has none of that. I've played this game through to completion twice on the PS3 and I regret that more than I regret finishing Final Fantasy 7 Remake... though not by much. This game is BAD, unsurprising as the entire reboot trilogy is flaming garbage, but this one specifically gets me hotter under the collar than I'd like to admit. The story is dour and played out, the characters bland (especially Lara herself. She was never the most complex character in the original games but even at her worst she was still fun, and I'm not just talking about her character model. Meanwhile Plank from Ed, Edd, and Eddy has more personality than reboot Laura.), the gameplay is perfectly calculated to be juuuuust good enough, and there's really no tomb raiding, just poor excuses for "puzzle" rooms. This cuts to the main problem with the game, it's not Tomb Raider, it's not even good enough to stand as it's own thing. It's nothing more than a boring and weirdly violent (to an excessive degree, this is supposedly Tomb Raider, not Doom) third person shooter wearing a Lara Croft skin... which I'm pretty sure is a way she can die in-game. I'm an old hat who plays on my PS2 more than any of my modern consoles and even my PC, so maybe I'm just jaded. I just want a good Tomb Raider game again. Not this dull amalgm of modern gaming tropes. Just play the originals or even the LAU games (which are now on GoG, so that's nice) and pretend this doesn't exist. You'll have a much better experience.
