The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

This game is a refreshing change from the norm and the setting is so unique and appealing that I am considering running a Witcher game for my Pen and Paper RPG group! The combat (which is generally never a major strength of RPG's anyway-certainly not the reason I play them) is solid enough and while both types of sword have very similar styles, it is at hte end of the day, a way of eking out a bit more choice when it comes to character development, even if the actual on screen effects are a bit repetitive. The storyline is fantastic - I will point out that I did a silent groan and thought to myself "Oh no-not another hero with amnesia plot!" but given the wealth of backstory, it is difficult to figure out how else they could give the player the freedom to mould Geralt to their own tastes without it running counter to canon for those who may have read the novels or are otherwise familiar with Geralt. It actually works fairly well in game anyway and very rarely does the amnesia mechanic spoil anything. In fact, coming to the Witcher universe fresh (as I did) was if anything probably more fun as you piece Geralt's memories together with him, and grow more attached over time, even if "your" Geralt turns out a bit different to the original! In short there are hours of gameplay here for a bargain price. The game pokes fun at both itself and standard RPG tropes and cliches and for all the darkness and grittiness of setting and tone, it also manages to not take itself too seriously and I have to say I had fantastic fun. As a final note on some of the mature themes and so on..... While people who are offended or otherwise upset by the content (particularly the nudity etc) are entitled to their opinion, at the end of the day it is stated pretty clearly on the box/store page that the game contains mature content. Furthermore, it's not like it has to be a major part of the game! Off the top of my head there are only around 2 or so characters in the game that you will see wandering around nude-anything else is as a result of collecting their romance card -which you can only have seen by CHOOSING to complete whatever prerequisites there are to get them to sleep with Geralt! Suffice to say you can ignore this aspect of the game if you like and miss nothing in terms of plot. In short, everyone should get this game and enjoy it their way-theres a lot of fun to be had!

I bought the game this morning.. i tried in a computer with operative sistem of 64 bits and later, after uninstalling it, in another with 32 bits. Don't work in neither, even having installed DirectX 9.0c. I'm very dissapointed...

At least as an older gamer on a non-gaming PC (core2duo e8600, gt1030) and 5:4 monitor, I found the graphics absolutely fantastic. But that's where any liking for the game ends. All available player-view options were really badly applied 3rd-person ones. The two isometric ones are at least familiar but done in a tad unwieldy way, and the OTS (over-the-shoulder) view option is not much better as it's only about as good as the really quite unwieldy 3rd-person OTS view option in Fallout 3 (which almost everyone who plays Fallout 3 eschews in favour of that game's superior 1st-person view). But sadly there is no 1st-person option in Witcher, and the game is far poorer for it. Some say a 1st-person wouldn't work, but that's only because of the way the makers added some things (like opponent indicators) around their 3rd-person view, which could easily be moved. And the Witcher's best view option, the OTS one, clips and chops around like Fallout 3 on a very bad day. A game-breaker frankly. Fight mechanics are ok (if basic), and the story-line bearable (if you like awful tweenage dramas like The Twilight Saga). Yet this is made worse by the (very frequent) cinematic cut-scenes. Am I playing a game or watching a B-movie? Even the tutorial was bad and poorly executed - e.g. I could easily get to the required winch but couldn't interact with it as a far off out-of-sight enemy NPC was still alive and the game didn't even bother to mention this - it was just as if the winch was non-interactive, etc, etc.

10/10 masterpiece

Although story and graphics are nice, the linearity, the lack of freedom and the poor number of missions reminds me more on a complex action game than a real RPG. Something you will enjoy once.
