The Detroit After is a violent and ruthless top-down shooter with an emphasis on action and fast-paced gunplay. Shoot, break down doors, kick enemies, stun them with the butt of your rifle to complete your missions. Equipped with a powerful new A.I. and extraordinary strength, you will work in the shadows by eliminating the killers of a powerful rival company using the various weapons you will find along your way.
• You play as a very tough and advanced robot.
• 15 levels of pure action.
• Fast-paced gameplay.
• Devastating weapons.
• Find new chips for various upgrades.
• Each hit slows you down.
• Each level has its own music track.
• Arcade oriented. The story is told in a short and simple way and does not break the rhythm of the game.
• A journey from the violent streets of Detroit to the luxurious offices of Techmann, your company's competitor.
• Cops and mercenaries, both will be your enemies. They will try to destroy you in every way.
In a world increasingly dependent on computers, Hi-Tech companies battle with technological innovations to reach an ever greater number of customers.
The need to open up to new markets in order to continue to grow and compete in an increasingly aggressive way, pushes some of these companies to invest heavily in robotics and artificial intelligence.
You will embody the result of these incredible technological advances. A robot that will be used to "facilitate" the rise of the company by carrying out various secret missions.
Obviously the police will not stand by as you sow death and destruction and it will be another obstacle that you will have to remove if you do not want to be stopped.
A lot of skill and concentration will be required to pass the tests that await you. The enemies will be in great numerical superiority and you will have to carefully evaluate the battleground. You will have to resist all attacks if you do not want to be considered a bad investment and be deactivated by your own creators.
You are a big step forward in the field of robotics.
Could it possibly be too far ahead?
How far is the society that built you to accomplish its goals willing to go?
Will these great technological advances only benefit a few?
Could there be too much power deriving from these technologies?
Find out by playing The Detroit After...
Do you want a game with hours of cutscenes? Not the right game.
Do you want a game with endless dialogues? Not the right game.

If you are looking for a game that puts you straight into the action, THIS IS THE GAME FOR YOU!
Enough talk! Now it's time to shoot!
The Detroit After was, essentially, put together by one guy. And it's pretty good, considering that caveat.
It wears it's Hotline Miami inspiration on it's sleeve, but doesn't reach HL's greatness. The action is just a hair too rigid, the resets a moment too slow, the door breaching too delayed, the protagonist too removed, the translation a bit too clunky. Call it a fan mod for HL that is still in need of a few playtest interations. It's certainly not bad, and will keep most action fans busy for a few hours.
At the price they're asking (especially when on sale) I think it's worth getting. It's much less of a time commitment than Intravenous, is more fast paced and forgiving than Disjunction, and doesn't have Oxto's terrible permadeath/bullet-sponge-bosses combination. In a world where Hotline Miami didn't exist, another two or three months of fixing the 'juice' would make this a five star game. As it is, if you like top down single character action shooters, The Detroit After is worth a go, and it's author deserves supporting for how close to greatness he was able to get this thing.
A very good Hotline Miami clone IMO. I totally missed the chip upgrades (similar to the masks in HM, where they grant you per-mission perks) on my first playthrough, so I'm actually now going through again to see if certain missions could be completed differently. The soundtrack is also pretty good, although I did have to turn the background music off for a few levels. Hard level + ear-grating background music = misery during repetition.
The only other beefs, that are minor, are sometimes when using the lock-on, enemies can instantly shoot you when they turn a corner, but you will target the wall instead of the enemy. I'm guessing this phenomena happens because the center of the sprite is targeted, but the bullet generation is on the periphery of the sprite. It can be overcome by not using the lock-on when enemies are charging you down a hallway and aiming slightly away from the corner. Still, for a fast paced game, that doesn't always work out. The other one is that a few levels suffer from the Hotline Miami 2 problem of requiring the 'extended distance' option at all times. It's certainly not as annoying here because enemies can't shoot you through windows until *you* break them first, which is actually a welcome change.
I feel this title is definitely worth the asking price of <$4 if you're a HM or top-down action fan.
I like it. The graphics are, in my opinion, better than in the other known game. Sound, music is ok, the weapons have really a powerfull sound and impact. Playing with keyboard + mouse, it is smooth. Will try to write additional informations as soon as I go further in the game.
TLDR: for the pricetag, you can have a couple of hours of fun, don't let the reviews hold you back. It would be unfair to compare it to it's more successful Miami brother, it doesn't aim to be as deep and versatile of a package. Don't expect Hotline level of anything, and you might as well have a good time - feels more like a polished hobby project than a full-fledged game.
Pros:
- Graphics are fine, the effects are pretty good;
- Weapon action has some impact and is generally fine;
- The overall feel that you are a killing robot is well executed;
- The soundtrack overall works, there are some great parts;
- There is a really fun execution animation at the end of the office level:)
Cons:
- Story is uninspired and a slog to read through; I wish I could just smash the babblemouths in the conversations Doom-style and head back to the action. Would fit a killer robot better. There are a few tasteless executions without much impact too, that don't carry any dramatic weight.
- The door kicking and execution mechanics are aweful. Slow, locking you in place, lacking impact, more annoying than fun. Anytime I had to execute an enemy I rather waited until they stand up, it is that annoying.
- AI is dumb, they cannot even open a door. Sometimes they immediatly shoot you from the edge of a door; other times they choose a staring contest instead.
- Apart from a few standout levels, most of them are quite repetitive and look stale. The dark level was the most annoying thing I have seen in a while.
- GUI doesn't communicate information well. How many ammo cartridges do I have for my weapon? For some it's more, for some it's less, it's not clearly shown when you will run out of ammo completely.
This game is simple and straightfoward as hell, and its very fun. Great great music and the levels feel good in my opinion, tiny details etc. The story is also simple beeing the whole game a love letter to 80s sci fi vibes. You could also consider this game a "The Terminator Simulator", cause its exactly what it is.
Do not expect much more than short direct simple action and good music cause the game doesn't offer more than that, but taking in consideration the price, I think is a more than worthy purchase if you are looking for that. I enjoyed it a lot and I honestly recomend any 80s sci fi fan to take it and play it, you will feel like home. And if you just like top view action games, try it too, its fun!
I really hope to see more of this guy(s)!
