I played this in its original format, not the GOG edition, and I can say it is still one of the best games for space sims I've ever played outside of Xwing and TIE fighter games. It was challenging, engaging, and great fun. Missions were challenging but not impossible, and for it's time, graphics were good and performance was smooth. I used a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick to play this, and it made it much more like a real flight sim being able to spin on all three axes and control throttle. I HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone, even at the full $9.99 price. It is very fair and you will get your money's worth.
Nox and Cyberstorm 2 are the only games I have replayed more than this gem. This is also the only space combat flight sim I have bothered to go back and replay. It was very "pretty" for its day, and still isn't too bad. My entire family loved this game and played through both campaigns all the way.
The game is very linear, and there are only a few sidequests that you do not have to complete to advance the main story. Even so, the variety of tasks and challenges given makes each new mission exciting. Some of them can be frustrating with the difficulty (stupid space tourists wanting to go sightseeing with the Demon Pirates!), but with a few trial and error runs you can usually figure out a good strategy.
The 2 factions are similar but do have some key differences:
Galspan is the sleek big corporation, so you get the fancy toys and pretty ships. They pay more per mission, but most of their gear costs more too. Their ships tend to be faster, but a little less durable. They get seeking missiles and a few cool weapons that the Bora do not. Overall the Galspan campaign is a little easier (imho).
Bora is the poor underdog, so they re-purpose a lot of things (mainly mining equipment) to make their ships and weapons. The biggest thing to note is that most of their missiles do not seek, but they pack either a bigger punch or you get a ton more of them for your buck. They also get "sappers" which attach to the enemy ship and do a variety of things. Overall the Bora campaign is a little harder (imho).
I recently purchased it through GOG and it ran fine for me (windows 7 64bit). I went out and bought a joystick just to play it again too. Nostalgia!
Caveat here: I have not played Freelancer or the privateer games which I saw referenced several times in the reviews. I'll have to pick those up when they go on sale and see how they compare.
The game suffered from a hasty release and as a result the AI is mostly brain dead. So don't be afraid to crank the difficulty all the way up. If you like Bruce Campbell you'll enjoy the play-though. But this game really shines in multi-player. At least it did 17 years ago. Having 30-50 people in a map was fun. Each ship feels unique and for the most part balanced. Energy and system management were well done but there is little need to explore anything because of the lack of challenge in single player.
You'll want a joystick but you can play it with a mouse.
There were also mods for multiplayer which will let you fly all the NPC ships. Depending on which ones you find some were more balanced then others. However getting online multi-player to work may not be possible anymore due to the lobby IP address being hard coded into the game. YMMV
One of Novalogic's last good games, but it has the greatest chin and deadite killer, Bruce Campbell! That's all you need to know to buy this right now!
