At long last!

Spelunky is an excellent platformer in which you must get from point A - B through 12 levels (divided into four areas and not including the secret levels). The premise is simple but this game is downright evil in the best ways possible! Here is why: Spelunky is a platformer with Roguelike elements, which means every level is procedurally generated, and you are given a finite amount of resources to tackle them. You are given three resources to manage; Life, Ropes and Bombs and when you start you don't have much of these resources. It's very easy to use up these resources quickly (they don't regenerate at the end of a level) and therefore quickly die in Spelunky's crazy world! However Spelunky is all about learning when and how to use these resources. On to the levels, they are designed to murder you. There is many different characters in the world of Spelunky, and they can all lead to your demise. Shopkeepers sell valuable items to your survival, however they are quick to anger and hate shoplifters (yes you can steal) to the point that they will pull out a shotgun and hunt you down 'til you or they die! Other enemies like Skeletons may lay in wait 'til you are a split second away from them before resurrecting and attacking you! Arrow traps will shoot anything in their way! The point here is the world of Spelunky is a very dangerous place, and you start with a whip, a few bombs, ropes and life and have to tackle it. Gold and Adventure await!

Death is ever-present

It is punishing to the extent that if you do not feel like replaying the same first stages repeatedly, then you'll become frustrated and leave the game. The game also relies upon the notion that replaying a stage isn't a chore, but rather a back-handed reward due to the procedurally generated levels. Whilst a decent addition, the stages change so much so, that you are unable to construct an action plan that assists you in bettering the stage on the next attempt. I’m not a glutton for punishment, nor do I surrender if I find a game too difficult. However, the game is so unforgiving that it doesn’t feel like a game, but rather a lesson in obedience or stubbornness. Spelunky isn’t the most difficult title around, in fact it is far from it, but I found there to be more frantic movement and death then actual playtime. Spelunky HD is for a specific player who might enjoy repetition and/or doesn’t mind constant death, but I believe this game is simply unfair. Recommendations Implement an explorer mode with 40-80% fewer items and less gold to encourage exploration. Have an option to turn off the shopkeeper. During co-op mode, if a player goes off screen automatically have the game become split-screen. Alternatively, have a split-screen mode. Conclusion The game is rather cheap and unforgiving, rather than meticulously constructed in its design. Personally, I prefer games like Alex Kidd or Hotline Miami; games which reward diligence, and don't punish the player. 4/10

A Great Rogue-lite Platformer

This was a fantastic platformer which made great use of its rogue-lite mechanics. As is common for the genre, after the first couple dozen deaths without making much process, I initially found it a bit too difficult. However, as I kept at it, I come to realize my mistakes I was making and with perseverance, I made it to the game's ending. It was very rewarding. It's quite a casual experience, being a great game to play in short bursts. It loads fast and provides a shortcut key to skip the intro and menu to get straight into the gameplay. There's no save feature but as a single playthrough is short (roughly twenty minutes for me, an average player), there's no need for one. The path to the bottom of the cave isn't entirely linear either, with a number of hidden branching paths to discover, complete with other endings too. There's numerous items and monsters to discover as well, keeping each game feeling very fresh. There are a few flaws though. It was annoying that whenever a shopkeeper or his shop is damaged, even if not directly caused by you, they immediately become hostile towards the player. As the levels are randomly generated, I once saw a chain of events occur right as I entered it, causing this. When this occurs, the difficulty spikes up greatly. Also, when you take damage, you're stunned for a moment, unable to move and going limp. In many occurrences, during this you can be thrown around like a rag-doll and you're quickly able to lose a lot more health than the initial hit. It certainly makes you become cautious of your surroundings, but its a little frustrating that a good game can be over in a blink of an eye. Despite those, I'd highly recommend this game, especially for those who are fans of platformers and/or rogue-like mechanics. In fact, Spelunky is probably the best mash up of these two genres.

Good time with friends

I won't go in much detail for the single player since you can try it out with the classic version for free. It's the same, but with a lot more enemies, bonus levels and items. The multiplayer for this game is simply amazing. Each player control a character, but the camera only follow one of them, there is no split screen. It may sound horrible, but it forces you to stay together and try to work as a team. Note that I said "try", because the game is way more difficult, not because there is more enemies and traps, but because there is friendly fire. Communication is key if you're not a fan of getting shot in the back by a clumsy friend armed with a shotgun. Control is essential if you do not want to whip your buddy in a spike. It may sound dump, but half of the fun come from the failure you'll have with your friends. Because there is always a new way to mess up in Spelunky. The nasty part is that there is no online/LAN play, you will need to gather your party of spelunker on your couch and it's sadly not always an option.
