Great story, but needlessly frustrating
The core gameplay mechanic of this game is largely inspired by Resident Evil: you need to explore the level, gathering items in order to solve puzzles so you can get keys to access the previously locked parts of the level; repeat. Now for the review; let's start with the good points: 1) the story is great, and you learn about it bit by bit, as your characters are progressing in their investigation 2) each characters is fully voiced, and have their own lines of dialog for describing their surroundings and comment on what they read or find 3) the levels are varied and the ambience is creepy. You get occasional scare jumps, but not too many Now for the most annoying flaws: 1) permadeath does not make sense for this game: there is absolutely no replay value in running around in the level to fetch the same damn items to solve the same damn puzzles. It is just boring. What's worse is that some episodes can last longer than a full hour! Thankfully permadeath can be disabled, but only for the easiest difficulty level. 2) some of the puzzles are very cryptic and/or complex: it may not be an issue for all players, but in my case, I'm playing for the story, and those Myst-level puzzles are just stopping my progression for too long. I had to follow a walkthrough to skip the most convoluted ones. 3) the game is unfair at times: there are some spots where the game asks you to confirm performing some action. You will likely lose a few characters to those spots, since they are not all obvious death traps. This wouldn't be much of an issue if there wasn't the looming threat of having to restart the whole episode! There are some minor flaws, but this review is long enough already. In conclusion, apart from the "All your characters are dead; now you'll have to waste the 30 next minutes of your life doing boring things if you want to progress further" and the "How could I have guessed THAT?" moments, it was still pretty enjoyable, and the story was really worth it.
