Impressive
Probably best Harebrained Shadowrun game so far. It has really epic story which touches everything what is good in Shadowrun: Corps, Magic, Astral, AI, Cyberdeck, Dragons... Quests are rather short, and not really open, but have some planning in it, so we can do it our way. Companions have interesting design, and come in variety, we can also specialize them for our preferences, as well as take part in loyalty missions. Some of quests are really memorable. Just remember that this is turn based crpg with instanced quests build mostly about tactical combat.

Enjoyable but confusing
In Shadowrun: Dragonfall, you are a Shadowrunner that has moved to the Flux State of Berlin to help your buddy with a job. Except, no one tells you what a Shadowrunner is. In fact, in the course of the entire game, it never explains the thing the entire game is named after, beyond, "Someone who runs in the shadows." Well that's sure helpful. As best I can tell, it just means "mercenary." People pay you to kill people. [Oh, and don't learn Shadowrunner etiquette. Because despite your character being a Shadowrunner, and the name of the game being Shadowrun, the skill is *never once* used in the game.] They also never explain what a "Flux State" is. Basically it means there is no government. Except when there is to wrap up convenient plot holes. Anyway, the game starts with an quick job that turns complicated when one of your team dies from a failed attempt at computer hacking. Apparently in this universe, people take user interfacing very seriously. You then enter into your first combat situation, without any tutorial from the game on how to fight. Or any manual, because the game literally doesn't have one. But you eventually figure it out because, well, otherwise you die, so you get lots of practice until you trial-and-error your way into the next scene. One of the first things you learn about combat is that in this game, *you* are the storm trooper. While your enemies are blasting you away, your accuracy lies somewhere around 20%. Good luck. With that all having been said, this game, with all its flaws, was surprisingly enjoyable. It takes a few hours to figure out what the heck is going on, but after that learning curve, it's a somewhat charming, if not linear, storyline the captures the interest. The characters are mostly a bunch of selfish adolescent jerks, so not very relatable, but have enough background to be engaging. They did a good job of making it plot-driven, so I kept coming back to find out what happened next in the story.

Don't know what to say
I was going to give it 5 stars. It was a great improvement from Returns and I enjoyed every second. Then I got to the second to last mission "APEX RISING", a well-known game breaking bug occurred. I checked Steam forums, and they too have this issue. The dev stopped patching a long time ago, more or less every patch they tried it seems could not fix this bug. I will never support this company again, to code something so poorly and let it stay that way is unacceptable. Do not let them take your money. I foolishly bought Returns, this, and Hong Kong on sale. All of the time invested is rendered pointless in this game. I cannot describe how upset I am. I wanted to see how everything ended, but that is impossible. I wish I could refund.

A very uneven (and buggy!) game
Full disclosure: I did not finish this game, because a major late-game bug caused my game to lock up and prevented saving. There had been minor bugs throughout the game as well, but this bug in particular impeded progress; apparently many other players have experienced this as well, so it's not a rare occurrence. I don't remember running into any bugs at all when I played Shadowrun Returns, so it's surprising that Dragonfall has so many issues. Aside from that, Dragonfall is a really uneven game. There are occasional flashes of brilliance in the writing (strong and mature storytelling, well-written characters that are flesh-out and believable), but just as often, the writing can be extremely unsubtle, contrived, and rely on leaps of logic. One moment, Dragonfall will give you a lot of freedom in roleplaying your character and how you approach dialogue or problems, but then in the next, it'll comically fail to acknowledge important decisions you make or changes to the plot. The unevenness also extends to the combat. Combat encounters and missions can swing wildly from fights that are cakewalks, to brutal encounters where you face successive waves of enemies with no breaks in between, and back again to easy fights. In the end, I may have been able to overlook the game's unevenness, if it wasn't for the bugs. As it is, I cannot in good conscience recommend this game.
