Close to perfect.
This is the best retro shooter Doom-like I have played. Better than Doom 2016 imho. Graphically pleasing with satisfying secrets, a wide arsenal of weaponry, Doom inspired enemies and level design that maintains flow without ever becoming boring. I love this game full stop. It's almost a solid 10. Unfortunately it has some glaring issues that hampered my experience. First is the checkpoint system that erases satisfaction from the game while forcing a full level restart to maintain proper challenge and enjoyment. This wouldn't be such an issue but levels can be very long in ProDeus. Second is the inorganic way weapons and upgrades are acquired. It actually commits the sin of having you walk into a "shop" to obtain essential weapons and upgrades. While I like finding the currency and it is a massive motivator in exploring the levels and finding secrets. Putting weapons like the SSG behind pay gates removes that classic Doom hype of discovering these things during gameplay. Third is the weapon selection is too large. I know that sounds crazy but it is. When you have weapons getting in the way of other weapons and you are kind of implied to go into the options and remove them from their keybindings it's like. Maybe tone it down a bit? Every weapon competes with another all the time leading to redundancy and you end up not using some weapons at a certain point. You also need to reload most of these weapons so guess what. Have fun shuffling through every weapon in your inventory for a reload because getting caught with your pants down is a death sentence, not that it matters anyway! I think the game could have benefitted from a limited lives system like Doom Eternal. Or maybe a halfway checkpoint in each level that doesn't punish you too much but doesn't allow you to cheese either. Also I wish I could do pistol starts and find weapons in game like classic Doom. It's still great don't get me wrong and I hope if we ever get a sequel the dev addresses these issues.
