The Powerslave you're looking for

Having played the original DOS/PC version, Powerslave EX (by Kaiser, a prototype of Powerslave using KEX), and some GZDoom mods, this is the superior version to play. If you haven't played the PC port (which I rate 4/5 stars), do it first, and then play the remaster from Nightdive. Whereas the PC port feels like an Egyptian reskin of a Doom/Duke Nukem run-and-gun clone, and a good one at that, the PS1/Saturn gives the player some abilities (jumping higher, floating in the air, etc.) that fit right into the supernatural theme of this game. Instead of the more linear levels of the PC version, these levels have obstacles that can only be overcome with the abilities mentioned above, Metroidvania style, which means you'll replay some levels again (the good news: the levels are short). This Nightdive remaster is very balanced: it looks like you're playing a '90s game, but with higher resolution, 120fps, better lighting, and more advanced options for you to tinker with (even CRT emulation). Feels smooth, plays smoothly, and isn't constantly reminding you that this is a sHinY rEmAstEr. Well done, Nightdive!

A Neat Classic, No Longer Lost To Time

I heard about this a while back in a YT video, but it was exclusive to the Saturn - a console I never owned - so I thought it was neat, but that was about it. Fast forward a few years later and NightDive drops "PowerSlave Exhumed" - a remaster of the classic game for modern platforms. Now that I've had a chance to play through it (even went far enough to get the good ending), I can say that it was worth experiencing. It's not without some issues - navigation can be difficult at times, and a few of the hidden items needed to get the good ending would have been very hard for me to find without relying on a guide - but overall it plays very well. The TLDR description of "It's Metroid Prime, but if it were made 5 years earlier on the Build Engine" is pretty accurate. You run through levels shooting enemies and grabbing keys to open doors like in lots of other FPS games from that era - but then you also gain new traversal abilities over time that let you explore new stages and previously inaccessible parts of old ones in order to find new exits and goodies. Overall, I'd say it's worth a try if it looks interesting to you.

short fun

The new Powerslave is pretty dope, but i want to mention some issues: the length: i completed it in 4 hours. Didn't hear anything about this rerelease before, so when I saw it in my brothers Steamlibrary, I had no prior knowledge about the complete package. The original releases were fairly different, so I honestly expected to merge them somehow - especially because there are no secrets to discover (other than building the transmitter). That leads to the game being incredibly short. As I said, I needed 4 hours to fully complete it and I certainly didn't rush through it - played on the 2nd highest difficulty. When compared to Blood, it just feels like a first episode. the hitboxes: yeah, I just couldnt really get used to my own hitbox. It is just a very weird one! The x-axis is (or at least feels) much wider than the y-axis is tall - so you are essentially a floating cupboard. Other than that it is a very fun albeit short experience.

Excellent shooter!

This was my first experience with PowerSlave/Exhume and it was a blast. Reminds me most of Turok 2 but you can feel the influences of Quake and the other top shooters of that era. Level design is some of the best I've seen and the powers in the game make for some fun platforming. Would easily recommend to any first person shooter fan.

Great work, Nightdive!

I'm a big fan of Build Engine games, but somehow I've never known Powerslave and never played it when I was a kid, so this remaster was a perfect thing for me. After beating this game (which took me precisely 10 hours) I must admit this was way ahead of its time. The weapon system, backtracking and collecting special items that give you some abilities was something different from other games at that time. It was mentioned in previous comments that this game had two versions. One linear and one focusing on exploration. It may be frustrating for some players to go back to previous levels and fight the same bunch of monsters before reaching earlier unaccessible section of the map... but for others (like me) it has some charm. I just hope Nightdive considers remastering Redneck Rampage at some time.
