Not perfect, but good nonetheless

First off, I want to address some of the negative comments other reviewers have addressed. Some have complained that the stronghold was a "waste of money." This is a pointless complaint. Honestly, what else are you going to spend your money on? I had 120,000 coins at the end of the game. Give me a break. Others complained about a linear story. Sure. But how many story-heavy video games don't have a clear arc? A clear story progression is a big part of a logical narrative. People complain the story is too linear, but how many people want to watch a movie that jumps hither and thither at random. There are plenty of tasks and side quests to keep you busy long before you tackle the main quest. Someone complained that there are no AI scripts. That's just dumb, because there are available AI scripts for all the characters; you have to go into the character menu to assign one, but they're there. Another reviewer complained that all the races basically look human. That's also stupid, because the Infinity Engines all had the same problem. Human, Elf, Half-elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Gnome...all pretty much look the same. These races are standard fantasy trope, and complaining about is pointless. KotOR was set in the Star Wars universe, and half your party members are human. Get over it. Someone also complained about all the nonessential NPCs and the immersion-breaking tombstones. This was a crowd-funded game, and these things were placed in the game on their dollar. If you don't want to break the immersion, don't read them! Despite all the stupid complaints, this game does have its issues. Combat was enjoyable at times, but downright frustrating at others. The story, while deep and faceted, was at times heavy-handed and somewhat anti-religion. I didn't really like some of my companions, and I felt like the voice acting appeared and disappeared arbitrarily at times. Pillars of Eternity isn't as good as Icewind Dale or Planescape: Torment, but it's still a solid adventure.

where is the base game

I bought 2 of the programs and it still sais that I dont have the base game. Could they make it a little clearer which one you have to buy for the program to work...

Outstanding!

Pillars of Eternity is, very simply, an outstanding game. No, it's not on the same order of magnitude as The Witcher 3, or Inquisition, but that's because it's an entirely different style game. Being able to read is an important aspect of the game; without reading any of the content some people contend the game "seems flat". It is by no means flat, it is a very rich and immersive game, but again you need to take the time to read though the content; it isn't all laid out for you on a silver platter. Deductive reasoning is also a very handy skill to have for the game, or you can simply buy a "How to Play" guide and miss out on the rich tapestry Obsidian has woven. Pillars is essentially an old school RPG, and it is a truly outstanding game in its class and genre. If you want Quicktime events, poorly written scripts, tons of "Go and fetch" quests, in-game financial transactions, digital sex scenes, or a game that tells you what to do every step of the way, then this game probably isn't for you. If, on the other hand, you want a well scripted, thought provoking game then Pillars of Eternity should definitely be on your short list. Well done Obsidian! I'm really hoping for a Pillars II.

A great RPG!

I played the game when it was released and due to outside factors dropped it. I started a new game about a month ago and have now clocked 50h+ of game play. The patches have massively improved the game play. The plot while slow to kick start, gets into full gear around the start of Act II. Game play is solid, combat is challenging at high difficulties, the sound track is great, and the lore immersive. A few "bad" things: gold is plenty full, you will never need to save money for anything. The party AI is weak but kinda irrelevant as on easy/story mode the fighting is easy and on harder difficulties one would want to micromanage. Fast travel allows you to move to a location, but not within it so a little time is spend moving from A to B within a map. Combat can be daunting on new players as there are a lot of effects happening at once: use pause, read. Overall, no major problems and lots of good things.

Best Rpg I've played in years

Constantly wanting more and the curiousity it arouses in me on whats going to happen next is addicting. I usually have a hard time sticking to games with a lot of areas spent talking but I just find this whole universe riveting. I've read a lot where people had said theres more time spent talking than combat but I never had that issue, though I usually saught out combat with enemies as much as possible, and I gotta say I never felt like the text was too drawn out. Now my attention span is kinda crap so there were quite a few books in game I tried to read but they couldnt keep my attention, along with some minor conversations, but really most of the "important" text or the text to at least get the main story and whats going on is all voice acted so if youre worried about that dont. Theres a vast array of options this game offers, from tons of choices having consequences later in-game to really deep character customization, skills, and interactions. Pillars of Eternity is a Must for any Rpg lover wether it be videogame rpgs or pen and paper you'll love PoE.
