Challenging or unfair

Nantucket is quite a funny game. It is Challenging and offers a great atmosphere. I don't understand the negative comments, where someone is angry, because you hunt whales in this game. It is a game after all My only and biggest Problem with this game is the fighting system. As it is now I have to call it just unfair. With the dice system you usually have a 50/50 chance to attack an enemy. So far so good. But your enemys don't have to roll any dice, so they can attack you every single turn. And so they usually do. Now the most enemys, be it Whales, or Pirates can kill your crew members and even your captain with 2-3 strikes. Even with a Crew with mostly lvl 10 Characters I am losing one crewmate, or even my captain nearly every encounter, just because the dice are not on my site. That can be really frustrating, when you have to reload every few minutes. The Old Seadog mode (Ironman) is not really playable because of that.

Good, but too random at times

It`s a minimalistic strategy/role-playing game. While not being exactly picturesque with most of encounters illustrated in text the game does manage to capture an atmosphere of a dreadful, yet adventurous business that whaling was in early 19th century. The game loves chance. A lot of decisions and the combat are chance based. Your captain and crewmen have a die based on their profession. And initially not all die slots are occupied with an action; some are left blank which constitutes as a null move. Round begins with every character rolling a picked die. The actions are then selected by the player (one action per whaling boat if in water, or one per crew when fighting on ship). Nantucket is played with constantly updating your save files or instead presenting a fatalist outlook of Rocky`s Drago: “If he dies, he dies”. A lot of whaling expeditions and encounters can go horribly wrong with your most skilled crew just biting the dust because the dice didn`t land in your favour a couple of times. That`s probably my biggest disappointment from the game right here: it`s just too random at times. To make matters worse, your opponents never have a nil action, which gives a bit of advantage to them and make some battles just too chance-based, like pirate attacks. Wild and untamed combat is coupled with a navigation mechanic where you sail your ship between ports, seasonal whaling spots, and other points of interest. You are also tasked with supplying your ship as things like water, food, booze, and timber for repairs tend to be consumed while travelling. While the mechanics of the game can be a bit too brutal Nantucket offers great atmosphere and storytelling that allow you to experience the setting in its full toughness. It is a worthy experience provided you do not mind odds often stacking up against you. Shortened version. Solid concept, terrible combat

Great period details, artstyle, and RPG elements. Unfortunately, the actual combat system is RNG hell with no resemblance to actual whaling. While preparation does play a key role in the late game, the early game leaves you at the mercy of the dice as none of your crew have the necessary skills (or raw numbers) to put up a fair fight against the creatures of the sea. Not only do you play with incomplete dice, meaning if your die lands on an empty space, that character simply does not take a turn, but random effects frequently prevent you from taking a meaningful turn even if you do have good dice. You can mitigate this when you get more whaling boats, and bring on more crew to simply throw more dice at the problem. Eventually, the sheer weight of probability will need to weigh in your favor as you outnumber the enemy threefold. But at that point, it's less a strategy game and more of a whaling Zerg Rush. Then, you reach the final boss. A boss that has an innate effect that makes it immune to all forms of damage and all negative status effects. I wish I was making this up. The only way to get past it is to use a specific item on him... an item bound to one specific face of one specific character's combat die. This character can be stunned. This attack can miss randomly. This attack can be blocked by random effects you have no control over. The boss can enter a state where he can not even be targeted in the first place. You need to hit this specific item, then hit the boss with the item, then hit him with as much damage as you possibly can before... he gets the status back and heals himself. You need to hit this item at least twice in the same encounter to win, assuming everything else goes perfectly. If you still think this game is worth your time, go nuts. Otherwise, you're better off buying lotto tickets. There once was a game called Nantucket. The combat you just had to luck it. Through sheer force of will and too much Advil I threw all my dice in a bucket.

A Cunning Sequal to the Moby Dick

For starters if you haven't read Moby Dick then go and read it. It's wonderful. This game seeks to pick up where things left off at the end of Melville's epic tale, and it does a great job. First, the battle system is card based, and it can be quite rough if you try to jump into things too soon. The key is to take your time and gather money by doing small things, then work your way to the bigger jobs. (I died many times trying to jump into battles too soon...) The dice system is definitely a little more in depth than I originally though and deserves some active research and understanding or it can be frustrating. There's also the resource management side of things. It's easy to let this fall by the wayside in attempts to go complete jobs, but without proper resource management you will easily find yourself sinking in an unknown sea with no one to save you. The writing is great, if not a little quirky at times. Not a fan of all the of random scenarios they throw out there, as I feel they are a little modernized and don't really stick to the feel and flow of the original story-line. But, that's all opinion and shouldn't affect the score in my opinion. The sound effects are fantastic. From the wind in your sails to the water slapping the side of your boat, you hear the ocean around you so the immersion is perfect. The music, also, is fantastic. The shanties that are randomly thrown in make you feel like you are surrounded by sailors who have broken in to song to "whistle while they work" so to speak. It's great. (The extra shanties from the DLC are worth it as well!) My only real complaint about this game is that the sound track is not even available for purchase here on GOG... I wish it was. I'd buy it. Worth it at full price, a steal on sale. I highly recommend this game as long as you like reading, sailing, resource management, and card/dice/chance based battling.

Surprisingly Replayable

Having owned this game for 2 years, I can tell you I come back to it and do a playthrough every few months. The music, story, and atmosphere are great. You wouldn't think it would have great replay ability since the story is the same every time, but you can change how you get there every time. Also, different sailors and whaling areas in each game means that no two play throughs are the same.
