Best Space 4X Game
When I first started computer gaming, I played Master of Orion, the original 16-bit graphics version. It was amazing. This game captures the style of that game, but incorporates elements from the classic Master of Orion 2. A fine and worthy successor to MOO2, vs. that Master of Orion 3. And the personalities. Mark Hamill and Alan Tudyk really work well in this.

I liked it
I liked it. It was very much like the original and second, but graphics greatly improved. You still have an option of controlling your fleets during battle or watch them fight on their own, which I did enjoy watching. It's pretty easy to play and a very simple 4X type game. Could it be better? Yes, but it wouldn't be like the originals. The only downside is, I cannot run it on mac as it does not run with apple's new silicon.

Poorly Cloned Civ: Beyond Earth
I went into this game with high hopes; Master of Orion II was a pristine gem that still holds true even to day. Imagine my surprise when I tried this game and found it...poorly designed and executed. Some bugs (features?): -Custom race building is an unbalanced mess of disjointed and incorrectly-costed abilities. I assume the devs decided to balance the race building to keep pvp...'fair'? The multiplayer is NOT DRM-Free and I don't care about multiplayer in the slightest. -Unless you play on Easy, be prepared for blatantly unbalanced AI opponents. While I won't claim to be some kind of 4x master, I would like to imagine that I'm competent enough to observe. I tried to replicate the seemingly unfair advancements of the pre-built races and there was literally no scenario that could lead me to that level of development. -RTS ship combat is a clunky illusion of choice. Your designs will never matter, except to make your ships take painfully longer to build. -Building anything takes way too long...unless your the AI, and then whatever ship they build will always be finished before yours regardless. -Diplomacy is a confusing mess. Color coding dispositions is a great idea, but you will find that you are in some Cthuliod alternate dimension where 'green' means wary, tense, or hate. -Blatant copying of Civ is just the opposite of what I was looking. -There are so many vague alternate win conditions that it's unintuitive and worthless. -Unless you play the game in the precise way the devs want you to play it, you will be overtly and directly penalized. You want to be full defensive and be aggressive? That's 'ok,' here are aliens who will ALWAYS more stats. You want to just invade everyone? That's 'ok,' here are aliens that will find some backdoor to you place (and have more stats). Working on a victory? Here are aliens that will always be ahead of you on yours and so far ahead on the others that yours can NEVER win the game.

Excellent Space strategy management game
This is a great game. Pros: Ability to micromanage, but no need to. In many games, once you expand enough, the micromanagement of setting 1,000 different colonies to make a certian building or such and such is a major burden. In MOO, it is easy to do that, 1,000 times, or set a policy of what you want the coloy to focus on. Even without a policy, the game engine will generall do what it feels is "best" for the moment. For example, it will automatically select to build up food and finance on a new colony. Pros: Mods - while some games are essentially just a framework and need mods to make them good, MOO is great without mods. Or, grab something like the ultimate mod, and have a go. Pros: No arbitrary and caprecious game choices. Some games will allow the player to select to research (for example) a new shield or a new rocket. This doesn't limit like that. The tech tree is more like Civilization. Pros: No need for mulitplayer. For people who want to game on their own time, this one is great. Cons: None, really. Most of the low ratings seem to be that the multi-player requires GoG Galaxy. Since I don't do multi-player for this type of game, it doesn't matter to me.
