Jupiter Hell

Spiritual sequel to DoomRL this game has an impressive graphics engine, very good use of sound (including the option to turn the BGM off) and full controller support. I have played with both a Logitech F310 and DualSense controllers, though support is better with the Logi game pad which registers as an Xbox controller but has the same layout as a Playstation controller which I prefer. The game has a comprehesive tutorial and many game modes to explore. If you are concerned whether this will meet your expectations as a Roguelike - if you want turn-based, high variation and difficulty, this is excellent on all counts. If I were to be critical, it is just to point out that xp primarily come from defeating enemies and over the years I have prefered those RL games that are item based progression, rather than xp based to permit stealth as an option. Having said that this game does a much better job of it than others I've tried including Stone Soup and Dredmor. As a comparison I play this game every month with Cogmind and Infra Arcana, whereas I only play Dredmor two, possibly three time per year. Long term I will be playing this in years to come because the game play loop is very good. Recommended.

Ich habe das Spiel ca. 14h gespielt und weitgehend genossen. Jetzt bin ich so langsam am Ende dieses Genusses und es wird "Arbeit". Vielleicht mache ich nochmal einen run mit einer weiteren Klasse, aber im Grunde fesselt es mich nicht so stark wie erhofft. Das liegt sowohl an einer nicht ganz getroffenen Erwartungshaltung als auch daran, dass es schnell repetetiv wird. Fuer den interessierten Spieler moechte ich ein paar Hinweise in Bezug auf die Erwartungshaltung geben: Das Spiel ist nicht Roguelike - zumindest nicht so wie alle anderen Genrevertreter, die ich kenne: es gibt hier keinen Fortschritt zwischen Levels. Es ist schwer und man lernt natuerlich, aber durch den Mangel an Fortschritt faengt man immer wieder bei 0 an. Vielleicht ist es damit aehnlich wie Jump'n'Runs aus dem letzten Jahrtausend, aber "true roguelike" ist etwas anderes. Entgegen mancher Bewertung sehe ich keine Gemeinsamkeiten mit XCOM. Hier steuert man seine eine Figur statt einem zusammenarbeitenden Team. So richtig tolle taktische Moeglichkeiten sehe ich hier auch nicht... sicher, man skillt gut und mit fortschreitender Spielerfahrung besser. Man lernt zu schleichen, wann man sich bewegt und wann nicht, wann man aus welcher Position angreift... aber das geht nicht weit ueber das Niveau von jedem Twin Stick Shooter hinaus. Das Spiel als "like chess but with shotguns" anzupreisen ist irrefuehrend. Fuer mich ist es am ehesten vergleichbar mit Neon Chrome, das ein "echtes" roguelike ist und sich sehr aehnlich spielt. Allerdings hat es einen viel dynamischeren und beseren Skillaufbau, der sich erst waehrend des Runs ergibt - bei etwa gleicher Action (auch wenn Neon Chrome ein Twin Stick Shooter ist). Grafisch ist Jupiter Hell super, auch die Audiokulisse und die Effekte sind gut. Hier ist es besser als viele aehnliche Spiele wie bspw. Neon Chrome. Alles in allem wuerde ich sagen: fuer 20 EUR bekommt man Spiele mit laenger anhaltender Motivation und Spielspass.

The things that draw you in seem to be the things that are the most frustrating long term. It's more of an addictive game than a good game.

Another game proving graphics is not everything. Simple rogue-like game. Every move = turn. Great to start it up and relax, without remembering story, key bindings, maps, blah blah blah. Oh - I'm not hardcore player and haven't played through lots of games.

Great graphics and sounds. It is easy to get into the game but there is also plenty of depth. It's not an easy game, even if you're good at other roguelikes. The randomly-generated levels add a lot of replay value, since the layouts and items vary game-to-game.
