Janosik is a retro action-platformer metroidvania. It's fast-paced, challenging, and full of secrets to discover while exploring its big and interconnected world.
The game is completely FREE and with no microtransactions!
Janosik's companions were captured by the evil Count Von Zur and it’s up to you to find and rescue them from the prison. Explore hand-drawn pixel art world, find secrets, jump over deadly obstacles, roll and attack enemies, collect gold coins and find upgrades.
Janosik will give you about 2 hours of single-player retro platforming fun.
Janosik was a legendary Slovak highlander rogue. According to the legend, he robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor, just like Robin Hood. The game is based on popular legends in which Janosik had special magical items given to him (usually) by witches. Those items gave him superhuman strength, protected him from bullets, or gave him the ability to jump over the trees. In some legends, Janosik fights with supernatural beings.
We took inspiration from the legends both for this game and the upcoming Janosik 2, and highly recommend that you read more about this hero if you enjoyed playing our retro platformer.

Short sweet metroidvania
It's a short (2-3 hours tops) metroidvania platformer. Keep in mind when reading this review that this is a low-budget title, and it is obvious in everything. Controls and gameplay: they are very simplistic and not modern, but overall they are also tight in their simplicity. There is a feeling of awkwardness to them. E.g. the character falls down very fast; you can kill almost all enemies without getting damaged by staying in front of them and mashing the attack button as fast as you can. You can swim, but there are no real water mechanics. And so on. Enemies: there are some varieties of enemies and some are more interesting than others, but overall they all have almost the same AI with very little variety and don't really present a challenge. However bosses are designed as very tanky, and, given what I said about the controls, I didn't find them fun. Level design: whole game is basically one very large screen. There are shortcuts between locations and some variety in settings, e.g. castle, caves, town, forest. Apart from me getting stuck for a short while a couple of times, it's great. Art: what you see on the screenshots is what you get. Nice old school pixel art. Music: there are a few tunes being looped, and there are sound effects for most actions. The music is nice, I enjoyed it, but noticed some bugs with it, like two tunes being played at the same time. Story / characters: there's a basic premise for the hero's actions and a few supporting characters. The writing is simple, but made with a humourful tone. Overall it's a short great old school platformer that you get for free, even thought it's more than worth paying something like 3 or 5 bucks for.

Lots of faults but shows promise.
A short platformer that has lots of mechanics that are poorly implemented which makes for a frustrating experience. The concept and the main game play is good and shows a lot of promise with its setting, style and overall game design, but it needs a lot of polish to truly recommend. No map, terrible hit boxes, unbalanced power ups, overlapping music, distorted sound effects and very basic pixel graphics unfortunately outweigh the charming presentation and free price point, but if you are willing to endure these shortcomings, there is the makings of a good game beneath it which I did enjoy at brief times.

DELETED SLOVAK LANGUAGE
1st version was parádna (great) with that slovak folk dialect. I cried with laughter. In my opinion that was best feature in game. And it should return because Janošik was born in Terchova in Slovakia. Other think are good.

Not a fan of platformers, however......
this one is quite cute and rather enjoyable. Or at least until I got to the "spider boss", and then remembered why I've pretty much hated platformers since the likes of "China Miner" on the C64! So though I give the game itself 3 stars, value wise it is 5, as it won't cost you a penny, so you can't lose really.
