Janosik is a retro action-platformer metroidvania. It's fast-paced, challenging, and full of secrets to discover while exploring its big and interconnected world.
The game is completely FREE and with no microtransactions!
Janosik's companions were captured by the evil Count Von Zur and it’s up to you to find and rescue them from the prison. Explore hand-drawn pixel art world, find secrets, jump over deadly obstacles, roll and attack enemies, collect gold coins and find upgrades.
Janosik will give you about 2 hours of single-player retro platforming fun.
Janosik was a legendary Slovak highlander rogue. According to the legend, he robbed nobles and gave the loot to the poor, just like Robin Hood. The game is based on popular legends in which Janosik had special magical items given to him (usually) by witches. Those items gave him superhuman strength, protected him from bullets, or gave him the ability to jump over the trees. In some legends, Janosik fights with supernatural beings.
We took inspiration from the legends both for this game and the upcoming Janosik 2, and highly recommend that you read more about this hero if you enjoyed playing our retro platformer.

Played a little bit of this so far and I'm loving the simplicity of it all. Simple, re-mappable controls, great music, fun graphics and story.
I couldn't ask for more in a game... Much less would I dare to ask for it for FREE!

This is a how a game should be made.
Simple, fun, rewarding. It doesn't punish the player. It gives you a sense of progression, you get 'stronger' and have an edge over enemies later in the game.

I tried the game thinking "if it's not grat I uninstall it after 5 mins and that's it".
I finished a very nice metroidvania with a dynamic gameplay around 2 hours later.
What really made me love the time I was having are two simple elments:
1. Impressive level design that puts everything but the tutorial on 1 big screen, allowing you to find the hidden passages if you think for a bit while keeping the backtracking parts to a minimum. You won't have to come back to the beginning of the game to unlock a secret area with the last item which can be tedious in some games of the genre (i.e Axiom Verge 2).
2. Power ups and item the game let you use pretty much whenever you want. You keep dying on a specific section fire up your pistol way more, there are ammos all over the place. You can save the coin? Then by all means do buy the powerups, some can really change the feeling of the game. I think waht I try to express here is that items make you feel much more powerful and free, not just by killing ennemies in less hits but by dealing with traps and ennemies more and more as you like.
So basically it a fun game that would deserve it's 5 stars if it was around 5€ but for some reason the devs decided to make it free... Well time for me to go see their other games.
PS: In case you are afraid the story is o,ly for fans of the show or smthg, I didn't know it existed until this morning and the game is not trying to deliver a complex plot here more akin to "kill the baddies"
Especially one with a unique setting, such as this.
It instantly worked with my wired XBox One controller, which is rarely the case, so that was a huge plus.
Controls are okay. Roll/dodge mechanic is unique, which is nice. The feedback on dealing and getting damage is a bit too subtle, making it hard to know the difference between hitting someone and getting hurt.
Overall, if you're a retro/pixelart Metroidvania fan, this is a nobrainer. A little extra polish (not Polish, that was fine :) ) would have made this a 5/5. Would have happily paid more than $0 for this!
