A brilliant remake of an old gem

Geneforge is such an amazing saga that even minor changes to it may feel blasphemous, and yet... This title is the perfect mix of respecting its predecessor and boldly introducing significant changes. The story and old maps are still the same (with new esthetics), the mechanics however are new and refreshing. Two examples: 1) there is an entire new line of spells specifically dedicated to Guardians (full disclosure: I am a Shaper so haven't tested the new skills); 2) if Spinecores and Pylons were your nemesis in the old games, wait until you see them now... I am also really glad that the creation system has been kept in line with what done in the first remake: if a creation dies no big deal, after all we can shape a duplicate at will (even if you are the kind of shaper that feels bad about it). For those new to the series of to the developer, I give my usual advice: definitely go for it if you like rpgs where your character has a hard time choosing a side, well written dialogues and stories, a well characterized universe, meaningful choices.

Geneforge at its best

Geneforge 2: Infestation is another Spiderweb remake of an old game, just like the previous Geneforge 1: Mutagen. And just like the first game, it improves a lot. Compared to Mutagen, expect: - Very similar gameplay (same classes, only 4 new creatures to shape, but quite a few new enemies and a new set of "weapon shaping" skills for warrior-types. - A bigger, richer, more realised world - A stronger, more engaging story with more vivid characters - Even more factions to navigate between and more choices to make - Less dramatic changes compared to the original game (nothing as big as the inutile storyline added) but still plenty of new sidequests and characters. If you haven't played the first game (And you can start with this one, it offers a good introduction to the setting and is an indirect sequel), expect: - A large turn-based RPG where you create a single character, but can create a party of monsters to fight by your side. - A fascnating science-fantasy world, where you are an acolyte in a cult of mages with a monopoly on magic genetic manipulation... a monopoly which is being challenged by renegades and your own creations rebelling. - A morally gray world where all sides have their points to make, and players have been arguing for over a decade which faction is right. And you have the freedom to choose between all of them. - Multiple paths to the game, with some areas featuring heavy combat and others full of traps or requiring (rudimentary) stealth - Plenty of secrest and hidden "challenge" dungeons - Fairly simple but satisfying mechanics. Plenty of abilities to choose from and items to find, but you may find combat repetitive depending on your patience for turn-based fights - Clunky UI and a lot of text to read. You will curse the pathfinding if you bring many creatures. Of all of Spiderweb's games, this may well be my favourite. Only the later games in the original series came close. I look forward to seeing those remakes

Another flawless gem repolished

Like the title implies, this is just one more game from the long line of solid games made by Jeff that is now repolished. For veterans like me, this game is simply a new pass at a classic that thankfully makes gameplay smoother and pets more solid while keeping the amazing storyline and background lore shine even more. If you are new to the series, then I envy you a bit. Geneforge 1 - Mutagen and now this wonderful sequel Geneforge 2 - Infestation is just the start of an amazing journey in the world of the Geneforge, the Shapers and the Serviles. A very complex and interesting world full of mysteries, twists, turns and that oldskool feeling that some of us enjoy in isometric rpgs. Game is pretty simple, you start at the bottom and slowly as you explore the 80+ areas , which are small self contained maps, you gain levels and to make this exploration trip awesome, you can do it in many different ways, you can try yourself and do it in a stealthy diplomatic way with minimum combat, go swords and spells blazing or summon a small squad of pets to control and destroy everyone that stands in your path. I think that one of the things that has kept me a loyal fan of all of the Spiderweb games is the fact that Jeff, the dev, makes it possible to play the game in varied ways and the fact the endings reflect your major choices is just the cherry on top + the adjustable difficulty. You can literally play these games in any way you can and even when finished, the community has created an amazing mod to do a second or third playthrough with wholly different mechanics as well. There is a lot of replay potential here, and even though I finished the original 5 geneforge games several years ago, seeing these new remakes with improved mechanics is just the best way to spend a couple weekends having fun. Just try it, no regrets here.
