I remember this being quite good back in the day, unfortunately it hasn't held up. There are quite a few banal scenes where you are literally just looking around or taking a shower. The Simon Says QTE's grow old really quick, especially during the fight scenes where the prompts are many and obscure the action on the screen.
Still enjoyable in places, but I had to watch the last portion of the game on a longplay. The QTE fatigue had set in.
I would rate this game 4.5 to 5 stars if it wasn't for the ridiculously hard QTE's. I've played many games with QTE's like Telltale Games and others. Those games had challenging but not frustrating QTE's. By that I mean it may take multiple tries to get through the QTE's, but they weren't nearly (or completely) unbeatable like the ones in Fahrenheit.
I put up with the frustration of the QTE's in this game until I got the scene in the office where you have to escape from the bugs. I've tried literally over 75 times to beat this set of QTE's and failed. After this I uninstalled the game and accepted that I'll never be able to finish this game.
If you can get through the QTE's, this game is a great game. It has a great story, top notch voice acting, good audio, decent graphics and flawless controller support. It's a shame the unfairly hard QTE's ruin the game.
This is a first game/interactive movie done by Quantic Dream and I actually consider it the best one. It has gloomy, realistic atmosphere, and for the time it was made, graphics were fine, voiceover good and music contributed to the depressive but inviting setting of New York under extreme cold weather (I believe it is set in NY but it is 20 years since I have played it). I cannot comment on Remastered version as I did not play that one.
It is adventure-like from third-person view with realistically made characters, although focus is more on dialogue and quick action sequences compared to the classical adventure gameplay involving item using and item combining.
Story is ritual murder mystery, with the murder committed by the main protagonist, who seems to have no clue why he committed the murder. Additional player character is police woman investigating the murder and then a few other later in the game. It has horror elements but it is not horror per se, instead it is dark mystery game.
Compared to the rest of Quantic Dream Games, this one keeps the momentum and story is strong. The quick action sentences are fun. You have "Sanity Meter" and you need to keep it in the check otherwise the game ends. There is no story branching except at the very end, and maybe that is the reason why I consider it well done. Later QD games tried to create non-linear narrative but IMO they failed. Also, there is healthy focus on character personalities but it is not to the detriment of story, which I consider to happen in Heavy Rain.
Assuming the Remastered Version is technically all good, I recommend to play it, if you like captivating story, interactive movies and captivating characters.
Quantic Dream are amazing at telling unique stories. This game enabled them to write Heavy Rain and Beyond 2 Souls, which I also highly recommend.
If you add the game to non-steam library, you can use steam input to play with a controller.
5/5 stars. I love the main characters. They have their faults, but they are realistic.
