I ve always been a great fan of Empire Earth, played it a lot...When this game came out, I bought without thinking twice, paid 50 bucks on it...
I tried to play it, I forced my self for some hours, but it was so boring and annoying that i could not take it any longer. So go buy EE 1 and 2 and don't waste your time with this one.
The best way to enjoy this game is to take it out of the context of being an Empire Earth game and pretend it had no games before it.
Graphics are merely okay for the time - this was released at around the same time as Red Alert 3. Unit designs are mostly forgettable, but a few really stick out. There are a couple outright weird ones which have no place in a historically-themed game, though. Naval units are also hideously buggy, which is sad because prior Empire Earths had pretty good naval combat.
The gameplay is simple, and more comparable to a stretched out Starcraft than to other 4X RTS games, to the point where it's curious that EE3 could be called a 4X at all - it lacks the depth of said other RTS games, for instance. However, in place of a traditional campaign, World Conquest mode does add in a fair amount of replayability as it lets you actually take your empire from the start of civilization onwards. There was a lot of potential in this game mode, and it's somewhat marred by only having a map of Earth to use.
All and all, a playable game that leaves a lot to be desired. Hard to recommend but the simplicity makes it an easy entry into the 4X genre, though the Starcraftiness of EE3 is a bit of a personal turn-off.
I understand the desire to go ahead and do the complete series when uploading classics like 1 & 2 of this series, but 3 is a complete nightmare. Rushed development, horrible cheap voice acting, sketchy controls when they work; it is just bad all around.
Even if you are a die hard fan of the series you should avoid this game.
Civilizations: In reality it's more Continental Regions. They're basically templates a player chooses from. Each have their own tech tree, building and unit sets. This is different from Empire Earth 1 where you had one building set and one tech tree. In EE1, strength came from the Civilization bonus editor and unit stat boosting throughout the game. I can see why people are put off on this, because EE1 had a large list of bonuses to choose from which gave players different ways to approach the game and every unit could be boosted in attack, speed, health, range, area damage, etc.. Which can be done as the game progresses. There is a civilization editor in EE3 though and you can select through a point system what researches you start with and what units you start with. So you can inject some variety into your skirmish games.
Epochs: Around 5 of them a departure from EE1's 14 epochs. Ancient is EE1's Bronze/Dark, Medieval is EE1's Middle Ages, Colonial covers EE1's Renaissance through Industrial, Modern covering Modern, and Future covering Digital/Nano.
Path Finding: Pain in the ass. Made more obvious in the game with how sluggish units are and can be frustrating at times trying to get anything to move through terrain.
Resources: Down to Wealth, Materials, and Research. Less time spent of eco management to encourage more focus on combat I guess.
Combat: Follows the same Rock, Paper, Scissors formula like EE1. So no change there. Naval and Air combat is still there, Mechs still exist too.
Dialog: Tad annoying and childish, lot of dad jokes.
Graphics: Nothing really pops out and wows you. Characters look like dwarfs. It does have weather, seasons, and the environment looks nice. Civ color though seems to drown out a lot of detail on units and buildings.
Music: Didn't really pay attention, but music does change when you enter combat.
I think had they not called this game EE3 it would have been saved from being compared to EE1. Maybe even standing on it's own.
When my old Empire Earth install stopped working with a windows update all the way back in 2008, I decided to pick this game up. It wasn't the best experience, they tried some new gameplay ideas which I found interesting but dropped the ball in other ways. The graphics were dated even then, the campaigns weren't what I expected, and probably the most damaging thing was their attempt to chase the trends seen in other games in the genre, falling right into the RTS decline at the time.
Something I can praise is while the graphics weren't the best, the designs were very solid and gave each faction a distinct feel, and you really get that feeling of your faction changing over the eras. They did a good job making each one play differently as well, and it was quite fun doing a few games as each faction and figuring out their strengths and weaknesses. The Middle-East faction has some cheesy tactics you can pull with stealth, which was definitely my favorite part of that.
