Clunky, with a Horrible UI and Awful Sound and Music Options

I have a Let's Play here; It will NOT be on-going: https://youtu.be/oLDr3f-1w2Q Clunky is the name of the game here. Text is displayed in a little, slowing scrolling boxes, like on the bottom of cable new stations :(. Everything is a process, to going to one place to make your character, and another for forming the party (why?) rerolling stats for over 10mins to get a viable party (why not point buy?). In town, to even INSPECT your character, you have to go to the tavern; why?! So many stupid, pointless clinks to get anything done. The UI in the game is unforgivably stupid, and that alone is worth a 1 star review. But there is more! Everything in this game is just clunky and old, all for the point of being clunky and old! I don't care if wizardry did it this way a few times, doesn't mean you have to! Innovate you lazy developer! Then there is the combat, it is clunky, VERY basic, and just bad. I made a group of lvl 1 characters, when into the intro dungeon, and half of my character's couldn't attack! Maybe because they were in the back row? I guess they can't just step forward and attack? Not even presenting it as an option? Maybe an old Wizardry game did it this way, so Elminage Gothic will too! :( The icing on the cake is the music and sounds options; they are WAY TOO LOUD! For settings, you have 1; which is off for some reason, and 2 which is crazy loud, and it just gets worse from there. I do not recommend this game; I do not recommend it at all. I was hoping for something good like Wizardry 8, and I got this. Shame, I did want to like this one :(.

Maps are less instantly memorable than those in Wizardry, but they're incredibly good nontheless.

A let down

This would have been great if there was any decent documentation on the internet, but the wiki is utterly useless and missing information that I actually need to figure out the game. Not to mention that half the pages have completely different formatting and written by people only slightly more sure of mechanics than I am. While an embarrassment of a wiki is forgivable since it's community-driven, the complete and total lack of information ingame is just inexcusable - there's no way to find out what stats do, weapons are labeled "main", "sub", etc instead of just one or two handed, no information on how to remove curse or fix cursed items, spells that have gibberish names and gilariously vague, borderline useless descriptions, I could go on and on and on. I'd be a lot more lenient if the original release date was sometime prior to 2003 and had just aged poorly, but that's not the case - it was released in 2012 for the PSP. The ONLY reason this review has two stars instead of one is because the port seems rock solid, with full controller support and flawless performance (not that it's very demanding, but still). TLDR if you want a Wizardry-like there are better options than one that looks and plays as if it was made by a complete amateur in 2002.

Old school in jeder Hinsicht

"Elminage Gothic" wird zu Recht in Verbindung mit Old-School-Dungeon-Crawlern gebracht, und so sehr ich mich vor 30 Jahren in diese Spiele vertieft habe: Man spürt doch, dass in Sachen Spielbarkeit, Zugänglichkeit und Motivation das Genre in all den Jahrzehnten deutliche Sprünge nach vorn gemacht hat. Und so toll "Elminage Gothic" mit seinen hochauflösenden Gegnergrafiken aussieht, so ist die Rückkehr zur "Sperrigkeit" früherer RPGs meiner Meinung nach eher abschreckend. - Charaktermenüs gestalten sich - wie früher - als Tabellen mit einem meiner Meinung nach umständlichen Items-Menü, das mir die Freude am Ausrüsten meiner Charaktere nimmt - und ganz ehrlich: Das ging mir auch schon früher so. - Die Gegnergrafiken sehen großartig aus, sie sind jedoch statisch, Animationen treten nur in Form der kleinen Funken auf, wenn meine Party angreift - das ist in der Tat old school, so richtig mitnehmen tut es mich aber nicht mehr - Die Dungeons erinnern in ihrer "schlechtesten" Weise an die Dungeons älterer Games: Sie sehen alle gleich aus, es gibt keine Landmarken, die mir die Orientierung erleichtern, und dieselbe Wandtextur wird ins Unendliche projiziert. Es gab ein Spiel, das den Wizardry-Geist meiner Ansicht nach erfolgreich modernisiert hat: "Wizardry: Tale of the fFrsaken Land" für Playstation 2, ein Spiel, das ich damals gesuchtet habe. "Elminage Gothic" dagegen ist für Hardcore-Fans ohne Zweifel eine Offenbarung, da es beinahe "alles so macht wie früher", ohne sich auf moderne Gameplay-Konzepte einzulassen. Das ist den Entwicklern auf jeden Fall gelungen, und so sehr ich manchmal in Nostalgie schwelge und mich an Retro-Games oder den alten Klassikern erfreue: Hier war es mir persönlich einfach ein Schritt zurück zu viel.
